I grabbed MH3U a while back, and I'm currently at 7* Village. Thought I'd come on here and find people to hunt with online once I've beaten the offline mode. Yo ho.
I'm gonna go as far as to call myself a 'seasoned hunter'. The only other MH game I've played is MH3, but I clocked quite a few hours into that one. My favorite weapon used to be the Longsword (no worries, I always went out of my way NOT to trip people), but since MH3U no longer allows continuous spirit combo spamming, I am now a Dual Blades kind of guy. I also like the SnS, Switch Axe and Lance.

Unrelated: What's the deal with Slime element? OP or overrated?
