PostSubject: Things I wish I knew when I started MH4U   Mon Mar 02, 2015 6:38 pm

This thread is in response to a player being unaware that Multiple Monster Hunts only have set basic rewards + breakables. Please post your own to add to this conversation, and don't be shy, new players know VERY little.

Without further ado:

1. This game is extremely frustrating... and intoxicatingly addicting once you pass the initial knowledge hurdles. Best non-drug, non-exercise high you can get.

2. You can get rare items from shinies, so never ignore them, because they will disappear.

3. All everwood monster WILL PERMANENTLY DISAPPEAR 15-30 minutes after they have SEEN YOU. You do not have to engage them... timer will start automatically. If you had trouble killing them in under that time in a normal quests, you are going to have issues in everwood. Once you see the "Monster is about to flee" sign, you have 5 minutes from that point to hunt that monster.

4. Keep those charms!! You will eventually be able to recycle them into something usefull.. even the complete junk 1 point in one ability -10 in another, no slot rarity 1 has the potential of becoming a max rarity ultra rare one.

5. Multiple monster (Infinite spawn) quests will give you the same rewards regardless of how many monsters you kill. Your "extra" rewards come from the carves. Best skill to use on these quests is the "Carving God", where you can get up to 2 extra carves off everything... 3 carves from a tail (4 from Deviljho Tail) for example.

6. In order to do Guild quests, you first have to do an expedition, get a quest reward, and assign it to your Gathering Hall quest list. Every time you redo that quest from that moment forward, the quest will level up for stronger monsters, and better rewards. The higher the level, the greater the chance of getting weapons/armor rewards, with rarer skills & abilities.

7. There is a method of getting Ultimate Kinsect. Read the forums for more details.

8. All quests (even high and G ranked), will have cold or hot drinks in the box, if you ever need it and have forgotten it.

9. Don't attack if you see someone mount a monster!! (Has to be said).

10. Monster CAN and WILL die out of carving reach, and you will NOT get additional rewards because of it... you are just plum out of luck.

11. Certain "big" monsters can have up to 3 carving spots, with up to 5 carves each (with carving god). Without speed carving, maximum carves you can get is 9...

12. Pressing the start button will skip most animations (Particularly useful for monster death animations, when you need to start carving ASAP, like a Fatty or Moran). This doesn't work for your own death animations, or "First Encounter" animations.

13. If you capture a monster, you only get 20 seconds to do whatever else you wanted to do. Hunt Wisely.

14. Most weapon delays (like the one after a level 3 Greatsword charge) can be avoided by either rolling, or chaining into another proper move (For example, the hammer golf-swing can be chained straight into the Right trigger button with a tap and point in the direction you want to attack next, and back into regular attack into the golf swing, for infinite combo, as long as the target doesn't move or attack you :-P )

15. Jumping does NOT make you immune the way dash evasion does (Running and pressing the B button), and the monsters can and will hit you right out of the air...

16. If you get killed in the middle of the air, either because of a bad jump, or a monster had caught you and strewn you across the zone, other players, or your Felynes Can heal you out of that "death" if properly timed. You will only "instantly die" if you are on the floor the moment of the death hit.

17. Monsters in this game can sometimes "glitch" when going from differing heights. They will not move from that place or do anything else, until you stagger it with a hit. Use this time wisely... if you can do it, sleep bomb it for the maximum possible damage. This glitch is very unlikely to happen if you are already in the zone with the monster, and has mostly been reported to happen when you zone into a zone with a wandering monster the exact moment they are climbing. (Called the hump effect due to the monster appearing to be "humping the wall".) .... (ok, only I call it the humping effect. :-P).

18. Spinning the Left C stick is the quickest way to get out from a monster hold.... if you don't have a dung bomb to throw at their faces.

19. The Gypceros family of monsters have rubber skin, and like to play dead... So no shock traps, or being greedy when you think it is dead... look at the lightstone on its head for verification... if it is still flashing, it is not dead.

20. Felyne explorer food skill always ports you over to a "secret" zone with additional rare harvests, unless you are doing a low rank quest, or a Harvest Tour.

21. Meat & Drink upgrades are done by doing Gathering Hall quests. The drink combination is also unique in that it always provides different daily skills than the rest.

22. Using 2 Veggies will show you the full gamete of available food skills for that day. 2 of any of the others will show you 2, instead of 3, and will give you the buff that food is known for... 2 meats = 2 daily skills plus Attack, for example.

There are TONS more things, but tired of writing for now. Hopefully other hunters will chime in for their own additions.

12. I have not yet been able to find a way to skip teh death animation. Not by pressing any buttons, start, select. Is there an option you have to turn on for this?

(death animation and a few others are the acception) you just have to wait it out.

#14 above, I have found this to not be the case with most Charge Blade animations or combos.

#23. Blue carve spots (especially blue rocks in expeditions) seem to hold higher carve rewards.

24. Guild Quests (maps and area features) from expeditions will remain the same every time you do them. Some spots (such as the blue rocks mentioned above) will always have a set #/type of item it will give out such as a relic item or an earth crystal. Once you know a GQ well and have determined it to be one with better carve spots keep doing it and always try to mine first.

Not your OWN death... Gonna edit the original post. MONSTER's death animation. Most new players will just stop pressing all buttons not knowing they can still move around. If you press the start button, it skips all the moaning and groaning of the monster, and you can just get into position (crouching) to start your harvesting.

Ahhh: 25. You can harvest quicker (not mining or fishing) if you crouch.

Edit: Yep dcj, that weapon is heavy on finishers, and it seems finishers don't follow the same rule. High Damage/slow weapons, do have some good infinite combos (like going from level 3 GS slash, to slap, to level 3 GS slash), but if you do the final finisher, that is it. (Like going from wide arc GS to level 3 super slash, to finishing wide arc slash... you are pretty much stuck with a 2 second wait.)

^ oh.. I forgot that one. I actually just relized it last night. When crouching it doesn't wast the time of standing up and kneeling down.

26. Quests have icons to the left of them that will indicate different things about them.

Quests that show a monster icon require you to hunt (Kill) a monster.
Quests that show a shock trap icon require you to capture that monster.
Quests that show the herb icon require you to gather items and deliver those items to the red box item box at the base camp.
Quests with a Great Sword icon want you to slay a monster (There is no difference with that and "hunt" a monster, except they only use "Slay" for Elder Dragons and small monsters.)
Quests that show a fish icon will upgrade an ingredient after you finish it.
Quests that show the Wyvern Fang/Wyvern Claw icon will allow you to trade more materials at the Wyporium.

Didn't see it said anywhere so I guess:

27. If a monster flees during an expedition all things related to it dissapear as well. Example: If you cut off a monsters tail and begin to carve from it when the monster flees, the tail will disapear as well and the "nothing found" message will be displayed. This includes shiny drops as well.

So.. basically go for all the shiny and tail carves ASAP so you don't miss out on field report items.

I'll add one that many people might find useful.

28. You can easily get Slickaxes by fishing in Dundorma for the really large, red fish called the Dundorma Tuna. This fish can then be traded with the Everwood Veggie Elder for a Slickaxe. Just, don't mine on the way, because all types of Spalls take priority on his trade list.

29. According to one of my Palicos, each area has specific types of Palicos that can be recruited. This means that if you can't find the Palico forte that you are looking for in one area, try searching in another area.

30. You can now dye low rank armors.

Yeah, What Firpi Said. I meant rusted, as when they say "Rusted" on the top right of the screen. Those can be Relic, Seasoned, or what-not, which is why I didn't just want to say "relic".

Ahh yeah, that makes sense.

So is "relic" the proper general term then or is it something else? Expedition weapon/armor is too long.

Rusted is confusing with Rusted weapons. hhhmmm. Any ideas?

i think they were calling them excavation gear...

32. You can btw directly combo the GS finisher side swing into a horizontal strike. it still has a cooldown of a few sec but if you have a lot of time you can combo: ....Supercharge - "finisher" Side swipe - horizontal strike - Supergarge - .... (i only reccomend this if you are pretty sure you have enough time)very usefull against Mohran, or when you can flinch and immobilise a monster with a charge:
33.(still part of 32 but i feel it's also kind of a seperate point) for examle when standing on vines sometimes the monster get's stuck if you flinch it, if you hit it while flying up you flinch it in the air next charge flinches it while it's standint up getting it stuck in the vines again (i once got an azure los stuck in the vines 3 times in a row with this before he died)

34. if you play with SnS you can use Items while the weapon is unseathed (the game tells you this) but what some people might haven't niticed is that you don't need to hold the R button to use an item if you are useing the touchscreen shortcuts. makes using items with SnS even faster and easier

35. if you walk up to a shop and it plays a different music in the background there is a sale going on (this way you don't need to talk to them everytime to know if there is a sale or not)

36. (Many people that have been playing other monster hunter titles propably alrady know this) If you wave at the hot air ballon that is floating around an area at some time it will shortly highlight any large monster on the map

37. You can lose or abandon a guild quest (Not a gathering hall quest, a guild quest.) and still find a treasure area that will appear on the next departure.

38. You still get to claim your Battered/Seasoned/Venerable/Champion/-Insert whatever the last one is called here- relics after losing a quest (Just like you still get to appraise Charms and Rustshards/Ancient Shards after losing a quest.).

39. Sheathing your weapon while walking moments before you approach a ledge lets you skip most of the animation, because the fall animation overrides the sheathing animation.

40. With SnS and Dual blades, if you use the dashing attack (X+A) UP a small drop you will VERY quickly climb then jump higher and can do an aerial attack and possibly mount.

42. In multi-hunts: Whoever is the first person in a zone with a monster is the one that the 3DS is used to control the monster. If multiple people spawn in the same area with the monster, then it goes in order of how they are in the Gathering Hall. If you need to become the one with the "monster control", then either be the first one in the zone with the monster, or dung bomb the monster to another zone and be the first one there. This will eliminate Lag for you, but might cause lag for other hunters if they are in a remote, or high-latency areas.
