| Quote: | The origins of the Afterlife Brigade, Chapter 1: Kanade
Cue this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJrkGxXvDLI
Opening her eyes, Kanade looked around her. Her silver hair was flowing across the wet ground around her, as she sat up in the rain. She was atop a large plateau, overlooking a large gathering of structures, what seemed to be a primitive city.
Where...am I? she thought, the only memories in her mind being cloudy and faint, like a dream one just cannot recall.
Her form seemed strange to her, her limbs seemed too large, like she grew 5 inches in a single night. It felt awkward even beginning to move.
She grasped her heart. It was the only part of her that felt normal.
Taisetsuna...
The word that crossed her mind...she had no idea what it meant or why it appeared.
She stood up, and began descending the plateau. Perhaps she would be able to find some information in the city. She descended very carefully, as her form still felt awkward. At a point about halfway down the plateau, the slant became steeper, ending in jagged peaks. As Kanade initially began climbing down this steeper drop, her foothold gave way. One of her hands lost grip on the cliff, and the other just barely held on.
I can't hold on... Kanade closed her eyes. Perhaps it was pointless to even wish to live in this bizarre world she had appeared in. No one even knew she existed. Perhaps she should let go, and simply, disappear.
Her grip loosened.
No one would even notice... The rain was cold on her single hand, and as she let go, she knew her choice had been made. She closed her eyes.
Immediately, she felt warm feeling where the previous cold had been in her upper hand. Instead of falling, she was being lifted up.
She opened her eyes. She was back on top of the cliff. Only now, the cliff was not deserted. There was a tall female standing over her, wearing what seemed to be animal furs and leather.
"Are you all right? You almost fell!"
"I'm okay. Thank you for saving me."
"Oh don't worry about it, I feel obligated to help people in need."
The female had bright aqua colored hair, most likely dyed, she looked very athletic.
"Sorry, I'm a little bit confused. Just where am I?" asked Kanade.
"Well, you are in Minegarde, of course! The Monster Hunter's main job mine!"
"Monster Hunter?"
"You haven't heard of hunting monsters?"
"I've heard of monsters, but I always thought they only existed in myths..."
"Well, you will see one sooner or later, they are everywhere, that's why monster hunters exist. By the way, I didn't introduce myself. My name is Kasumi the Kamikaze, but you can call me Kasumi."
"My name is Kanade." Kanade responded. It was odd that she had no trouble remembering her name.
"I was heading back to the city anyways, perhaps you would like me to show you around?" inquired Kasumi.
"I would appreciate that."
Kanade carefully followed Kasumi as she showed her the safest route to the city.
At least now I'm not completely alone.

Chapter 2: Kasumi the Kamikaze
Cue this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-y3yBWwmIEc&feature=related
Upon decending the cliffs, Kanade could see that the city was across a long stretch of savannah, about 5 kilometres long. It seemed much closer on the cliffs because some of the structures there were huge. The flat land in front of her and Kasumi was covered in short trees, grassy patches, and pools where animals gathered.
Kasumi pointed to the most common animal, a four legged grey creature that looked fairly harmless.
"Those are Aptonoth, they are gentle herbivores. I feel sorry for them when hunters kill them for meat. I guess we have to eat though."
They headed through the savannah, Kanade following closely behind Kasumi.
"Why do hunters...particularly...hunt monsters?" asked Kanade, feeling fairly clueless.
"My, you must come from exotic lands to have not heard much about Monster Hunting. Essentially, Monster Hunters generally hunt monsters to protect the weak and control monster population. Unfortunately, sometimes hunters kill monsters for sport, I find that degrading and not very honorable. Monsters are noble creatures that don't necessarily attack humans because they are horrible by nature. Sometimes monsters find it convenient to prey on humans in their current habitat, and that is where Monster Hunters come in. Otherwise, monsters are usually left alone unless we are doing population control, which only happens during mating season."
"Hunting monsters for sport...that sounds incredibly cruel."
"Some people just love to show off, is all. People like that shouldn't be given companions on their hunts, they should be forced to go alone and fend for themselves. If you want to kill stuff for the sake of killing stuff, go do it on your own time, don't force good hunters to come with you."
"Sounds complicated." Kanade was beginning to understand this Monster Hunter type of person in this mysterious world. She still had yet to discover how she had ended up here, but she should at least become familiar with her surroundings in this new place if she was truly stuck here.
Kasumi dropped the subject for something more direct. "We should be careful. Lately people have been injured by a monster of the plains that has developed a taste for human blood. I believe a civilian was even killed. That's why I was out here, I was tracking this monstrosity they call the Devil of the Plains. I forgot to bring rations though and I can't bring myself to murder herbivorous animals, so I was heading back to the city to pick up my rations before I found you."
"Wow. You sound like a superhero." Kanade gushed.
Kasumi was belligerent. "I'm not that professional of a hunter. I am only trained in a single weapon."
Kanade eyed the very long, skinny sheathe tied to Kasumi's back. From the jewelled blue hilt of the housed weapon, she could tell a blade that was honed to a fine edge all the time was kept within. Such a large weapon seemed fantastic to her, but here it was on Kasumi's back. How could such a large weapon even be controlled by a person of Kasumi's average size? Would it not be impossible to hold without tripping or falling over? Kanade could not see how this weapon would work out in a monster-hunting situation.
Kanade realized that her train of thought had caused her to stop walking for about a minute.
It seemed Kasumi hadn't noticed, as she had been walking ahead of Kanade in the first place.
Kanade began to call to Kasumi.
"Ka-" cue this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TE3-k64qmQ
But as she began to call out she heard a rumbling growl from behind her, and froze.
Kanade slowly began to turn around, despite her horror of what could be there.
As the monstrosity had just begun to enter her periferals, a noise that was so loud she had to cover her ears to prevent piercing pain erupting from the same area.
Upon covering her ears she could see the thing in complete view.
It was a orange-brown lizard-like monster that stood on two powerful legs. It had two stubby arms and a head that was flat on top. It's teeth were dagger sharp from the first glance, but as Kanade looked closer she could see that they were in fact serrated, meant to tear flesh apart. This monster was clearly a carnivore. It appeared to be at least 5 meters in length. Before noticing any of these features, and what Kanade's analyzation had attempted to avoid since the start, was that the monster's jaw was covered in blood.
"The Devil of the Plains!" Kanade thought as adrenaline began pumping in her veins.
Kanade was still frozen in place, unable to move. She feared the monster could run faster than her, and was unsure of what to do. The monster began to approach her, and as it neared her, she began to turn to run. Half way through the turn she saw a blue blur move quickly by her. Her head darted back around to see just what it was as she began to run.
It was Kasumi. As she approached the monster, moving impossibly fast for the weapon she was carrying. As she neared the monster, she began tracing an acrobatic movement that seemed to Kanade to be extremely practised. Whilst nearing the monster, she threw her legs up, so that the rest of her body followed, then finally the weapon bringing up the rear. At the crest of her jump, the weapon was brought around to the front of the stance, and the rest of her body followed. Upon reaching ground once again, her weapon was held at a horizontal in front of her, colliding with the monster's midsection- a perfect high-overhead vertical movement with the sword.
Upon colliding with the monster right in front of one of it's legs, the razor sharp blade cut straight through, causing the monster to roar in pain as it attempted to regain balance from an attempt to avoid Kasumi's attack.
Kanade could see why Kasumi had aimed for this area. The monster had trouble moving around now that Kasumi had caused it a wound at this part of its body.
Immediately Kasumi seceded, allowing the monster to execute a few poorly aimed attacks with its tail as it began to lose blood. After these few attacks, the monster began to slowly limp, then it fell on its side, unable to walk.
Kasumi slowly approached the monster, a sympathetic look on her face. She unsheathed a smaller katana, about three-quaters the length of her arm, that was tied to her leg.
"May your soul be given forgiveness as it passes to the afterlife." she said quietly, stabbing the monster through its heart and putting it out of its misery.
Seeing the monster was incapacitated, Kanade came out from her hiding spot. She approached Kasumi, who was stained in the monster's blood. Kanade took a step back as she saw Kasumi was mutilating the monster.
"What...what are you doing?!?" Kanade asked in dismay.
"Oh...I apologize Kanade, this is such a routine for Monster Hunters that we forget civilians are disturbed by the action. Well, traditional Monster Hunters believe that when we kill a monster, if you do not incorporate the monster in your own armor, or perhaps your weapon, you are committing a dishonour to the monster you have killed, you are essentially saying it was unworthy of your blade. This is just something hunters have to do after killing a monster out of respect for their opponent."
Kanade remained quiet, hearing this reasoning.
After finishing Kasumi gave her sword a flick, and the blood flew off of it. She repeated this action on a larger scale for her main weapon, which she had lain on the ground prior to finishing off this monster, then sheathed both killing edges.
Cue this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U311V4zWhYs&feature=related
She stood next to the monster, looking out across the plains, her hair blowing in the wind, its blue color tinted by the orange light of the sunset on the horizon of the plains. Her hands were clasped together, an oddly fragile looking gesture for a person like her.
"I never feel good about killing a monster. I feel I have done a greater good, but I never do not feel sorry for the monster. Ending lives is not easy, no matter how horrible one may have been. A true Monster Hunter realizes this. We do not kill monsters because they are evil, we kill monsters because human lives are in danger. If every single Monster Hunter understood this point, we may be able to live in harmony with the monsters around us one day. It is because we are taking the habitats of monsters that they attack humans, not because they love killing humans. I think that humans are capable of much worse evils than any monster. One day, I hope to change that."
Kasumi said this with her back turned to Kanade. Kanade could tell she was very serious.
Kasumi then turned, a warm smile on her face. "Let's keep going."

| Chapter 3: Yves the Venusian
cue this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5hzemOz4-4
Kasumi and Kanade were hurrying to the city, mainly to avoid being stuck after twilight in an area where many nocturnal monsters came on the prowl at night. Most nocturnal monsters were carnivorous, so staying out during the night would prove a challenge, especially without any rations to keep them alert and energetic. Thus they made sure to be on their way with speed.
Kasumi had placed the components of the Devil of the Plains that she had salvaged from its carcass in a pouch that had initially been hanging at her waist, on the opposite side of her shortsword's sheathe, now it was tied to her back. The pouch was very stretchable and had become at least 4 times as large, in order to accomodate the large remains of the monster she had taken. Kanade admired the fact that Kasumi could do such a thing without a noticeable sign of aversion.
It was past twilight when they arrived at the gate to the city. The sky was not completely black, instead it was a deep blue. Kanade assumed this was due to the bright incandescence emanating from the city. Many stars were visible in the sky, setting a glittering foreground upon a background of hazy magnificence that was their view of their own galaxy. Kanade wondered just where this world lied in conjunction to her own, and whether she was even in the same dimension, the same time period, as she used to be in. If only she could recall her past life, rather than just be aware that she had had a previous one...
Kasumi turned to Kanade, who had her head raised, she was staring at the stars. The almost neon, bright blue-white phosphorescence of the stars reflected off Kanade's amber eyes, she appeared to be deep in thought. Kasumi wondered where this strange girl was from, and how she had ended up in such an odd place as the cliffs outside Minegarde. No one except hunters, especially not civilians, ever left the travelling routes between cities. Who was this girl?
Cue this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHctVXM8-9E
Snapping out of her trance, Kanade lowered her head to look straight forward, viewing the city gate, which was brightly lit up by dancing flames and oil lamps. There were large walls all around the city, most likely to keep out unwanted monsters, and with what Kanade could see there were guards stationed at intervals on the walls, on the lookout for disturbances or perhaps wanderers like them. The gate itself was huge, consisting of two giant, stone doors, which appeared to be opened by a contraption which required rigorous manpower to operate. A lookout tower, essentially an extension of the walls of the city that respectively rose and travelled over the giant doors, was visible above the gate. It appeared no guards were stationed atop this tower, for it was higher than virtually every other such structure on the wall. Perhaps civilians could enter this tower to see the vast extension of the plains, or during a siege archers could use the area as a place of absolute coverage, with more than 180 degrees of influence for their range. This was mostly speculation on Kanade's part, as she had no idea if the people of this city frequently fought other people, or if they were a peaceful metropolis that only dealt with monsters.
As they approached the open doors, seemingly being readied to shut for the night, a group of guards could be seen about thirty meters outside the gate, looking up at the watchtower.
"There is still a civilian up there? Aren't the touring hours for the gate long over?" Kanade heard one guard say frantically as they came closer.
"Yes, sir, they were over hours ago! The civilian locked up the access to the tower, and won't let anyone come in to send him out!"
"Why didn't you knock the door down, you are in charge of the tower!"
"Sir, not to be ignorant, but the doors to the tower were built incredibly strong in order to prevent unwanted people from accessing it, mainly because it could prove a problem during a siege if someone could walk in behind a group of archers and surprise them!"
"Ah, to hell with it then. How will we get this man to come down?"
As this guard finished speaking, another pointed upwards, and they turned to look at the twer once again.
"Look, on top of the tower!"
There was a short man, not so much as an inch or two or taller than Kanade, standing precariously high atop the tower. Kanade could not see his face or much else, since there wasn't any lighting up that high.
One of the guards yelled, with a voice that seemingly was very experienced at shouting orders. "Civilian, come down from there! We don't want to have to give you harsh punishment!"
Cue this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ69nfw3mOY
The man stood as he had been the whole time, it was not obvious whether he had heard what the guard had called out or not. The man repositioned his head. He seemed to be looking up at the stars. He lifted his arms. Kanade realized he was saying something a couple seconds after he began speaking, his voice barely audible from the height he was at.
"...my family, the stars in the sky, from one horizon to the other! Come to me and take me home! I give my soul and my body to only my own! One day, maybe today, maybe much further along in my life, I ask that you take me away, to live once again with my friends and my enemies that once were, back where life was death, and death was life!"
He lowered his arms, with a motion that seemed to be him allowing his arms to go limp. An instant later, the rest of his body went limp as well, and his body fell forward off of the tower.
Cue this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAeTZo4aKq8
Kanade watched in horror as the man plummeted head-first from the height, more than 12 storeys high. The guards were frozen as they saw him falling, not knowing exactly what to do. Initially, one of them could be heard, whispering, "The idiot!"
Kanade turned, with a horrified look, to Kasumi, who was also frozen on the spot, a look of fear on her face.
Kanade began running toward the man's destination. She had no idea what she could do to help him, or whether she could even save him, but she wasn't about to stand there and let him ram his face into the ground. She ran at full speed, seconds later hearing an additional set of light feet behind her, likely Kasumi.
The man's face became visible as he reached the lighted area of the gate. He had dark, almost completely black hair, and a pale complexion. Kanade could not see the color of his eyes, for they were closed, nor did she loiter on this feature, for there was more pressing matters, such as saving the man's life.
When Kanade arrived at the exact location the man would hit the ground at, she nervously attempted to hold out her arms, in an attempt to break the man's fall. She had no clue whether this gesture would even end up helping or not, but the man did not seem to be incredibly heavy, so if she was lucky they would both come out uninjured.
She stood in that position for what seemed like the longest 5 seconds since she had hung from the cliff before meeting Kasumi. Then, she prepared to close her eyes and brace for the impact.
cue this song (FUCKIN EPIC SHIT) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vz7Gstx5ogk
But, right when she was about to force her eyes shut, she saw the man become alert once again, no longer completely limp. He was about 20 metres from the ground, and closing ridiculously fast. With a blur, the man turned in the air, braced himself, and landed on the ground in a kneeling position, no more than a metre away from Kanade.
Kanade was speechless, she didn't know whether to cry, yell at the man, or run away. She wasn't even sure if he was okay, or if he had broken a limb.
Her thoughts of the mans safety all but vanished, when the man stood up. His eyes opened, revealing his thoughtful eyes. The man had a melancholy look on his face, like someone had taken something of value from him, and he could not get it back.
His eyes focused on Kanade. His expression was uncertain. "Are you?..." He began to say something. "Sorry?" "Ah nothing." the man gentle took her hand, lifted it, and kissed the top of her hand. "Very nice to meet you lass. My name is Yves, to many known as the Venusian. Cooking enthusiant, and monster hunter."
Kanade blushed at the young man's gesture, then with the comment on him being a monster hunter, she noticed the sword he had tied to his back. It was the same type of weapon as Kasumi's, yet this one was less slender and had a more modest curve. Unlike Kasumi's the sword was encrusted with many jewels, from what she could view of the hilt, seemingly more elaborate than the katana Kasumi wielded. Kanade liked the appearance of both weapons though, they each had their own charms, and whatnot.
The man remained in front of her, seemingly awaiting a response. "Oh...I apologize, my name is Kanade." "Kanade..." the man looked thoughtful for a moment. Then he replied. "That's a very nice name. It suits you well."
Kanade decided to skip formalities other than names. "What were you doing up there? That was very dangerous!"
"Ah, that? I do that every year. It's...complicated." "Why?" Kanade inquired, quite exasperated. "As I said, it's very complicated. You see, I am from another planet." "You can't be serious!" "Oh, I am quite serious. I do not know the name, I do not know where it is, but believe me, I am from another planet...there are too many, much too many things in my life that have led me to understand that fact." "But that...that just doesn't make any sense!" Kanade was confused as to just what this man thought he was, obviously he was not an alien of any kind, he looked exactly like a human. How could he be from a different planet? That just didn't make any... Then her own situation dawned on her. "Actually...I guess it could make sense in certain respects." She almost hit herself for being so quick to doubt him. Is that how she wanted people to react to her own circumstances?
"Really?" said Yves, "No one has ever been willing to accept my story! You are the first! This is...kind of odd actually now that it has occurred." Kanade looked back at Kasumi, who was standing fairly close behind her. She probably had heard most of the conversation. She had a sort of irritated look, probably because of the man being such a risk taker. "We should probably get going." Kasumi said. With that Yves shook her hand enthusiastically. "Thank you for listening to me!" Then Kanade turned once again and put an innocent look on her face, as she laughed. "Ah, sorry about that Kasumi! Let's go eat! I am so hungry!" Hearing the word 'hungry', Yves once again grabbed a hold of Kanade's hand. "FOOD?!? YOU NEED FOOD?!?!?" He said, exaggeratedly. Kanade smiled nervously. "Yes....in fact." "GREAT! I love making food for other people!" He turned, making a extremely large pointing gesture towards the gate, which was about to close. "LET US GO! TO FOOD!"
Kanade turned to Kasumi, they both shrugged. "TO FOOD!" They echoed.
With that, they entered the city. |
