Since I've played MH3 Ive become a real MH fan. Now lately, I've been thinking about buying MH1 for my PS2 since it's the only gam being brought out in English for the PS2. Ive found out the online servers have closed.
Is it still worth the money buying MH1 without online play?

Well, Id just like to check out how Monster Hunter started... Just for fun, not to play online... I thought some advice could've been helpful.
Its an old game, so it should be cheap... Probably worth the money, just the experience...

-Warning.. i loved the original MH, so this is going to be a fanboy/reminiscing response. It should be noted that I would be considered a hardcore MH1 player, but i only really skimmed over the PSP series of MH games and came back when Tri was released(still think should of been on PS3/360 grrrrrr!). Also excuse my grammar and spelling, as a college student i write enough papers as it is.. i rather not spend my time editing my forum posts haha, hope you understand
-Oh and if you want to skip the crap just look for the "-" at the botom

I remember when i first saw MH in my friends gameinformer mag, and thats all i could think about was how nothing has ever been done like that before. After getting the game, and mind you i was a gamecube kid, I got a ps2 just for it(and my dying need to play the Ratchet and Clank games), i thought fighting anything bigger then a yian kut ku was suicide!! I remember actually going on a quest and getting as many resources as possible(i farmed one spot in F&H to get kut ku scales before i even fought him!) :affraid:

I almost gave up on the game when i thought about trying online. Now back then (yes i feel old lol, even tho i know im not) online gaming was only really seen on PC and the new contender in the market xbox, so i figured a total of 5 people would be playing online. Now why there wen't to many people playing online, there was always enough people to play with.

I was lucky enough to find someone who felt like helping out a new player at the time and as i fought some of MHs most popular monsters for the first time, with more confidence as a team, i was amazed. Soon i finally achieve the max HR 20 rank(yes it was that low), and mastered what was known as the "headlock" skill**. Or using such a strong weapon(or i guess just right amount of damage) that continuously hitting a los/ian in the face would perma-lock it into flinching.
**Note: Normally done with a spear, particularly the BDS, it could also be done with a GS as my guild at the time would try to do quiet often... we also joked alot about "headlocking fatalis with a rustsword(worse sharpness in game)

After online mode is was hard for me to go back to solo... if i wanted to play alone, i would just do online quests. It seemed anything besides LnS(Land and sky was a quest against both los and ian) was to easy.

--------Now heres where i answer your questions haha...
playing online opened up what was known as "monster hunter g"(if this was added after release, i need to mention that i did not buy monster hunter for a while after release) witch further added to the weapons and armor you could use, so as a veteran online player, my equipment would destroy the offline monsters, and it wouldn't feel like much of a challenge.

To buy the game without the online really depends on how much you like MH. I still own my copy because i guess im pretty attached to it(and hell after all those plate runs you bet im not selling that game) and could probably kill a 1st gen gravios blindfolded for as many hours as i put into that game(when i started tri i was still using the stick to attack)... sadly with no ps2 anymore i cannot play it(f*k you ps3). If i ever lost the game, yes i would go buy it again... but for someone who never got to experience the online play i don't think you can fully appreciate the game as much but it is still worth the buy.

Offline misses out on the elder dragon experience (fatalis,lao,kirin.. with fata being the only one to adopt the damage over multiple quests that most elder dragons have now-a-days) To my knowledge no other monster hunter game has had the 3 dif. species of raptor-monsters. Velioc/Gren/Io-Prey as well as a few other monsters, or at least g-versions of regular color. Also, correct me if im wrong, MH1 is the only MH game to have been fully produced by its ORIGINAL producers.

I think taking a look at all the maps in MH1 could show you where alot of the ideas for the maps in consecutive games came from, and in my opinion the first maps were the best.

Also if you missed out on the PSP games(i prefer my hunting on a larger screen without my controller attached to it), they are worth a shot too, you can use xlinkkai or something to play with more people. And if you DID miss out on them, i think youll find dual swords to be quiet fun :p

I actually started with MH1 about 6 months before Tri released. Picked it up used for about $20. Kicked my butt HARD. Was so different and challenging. I was instantly hooked. Just acquired a translated copy of G for the Wii and what a nostalgia bomb. I never even got to the real monsters in that one, but it got me into the series. Also, I picked up a PSP just for MHFU. Was well worth it.

i will warn you, MH1 is the hardest mh game there is. But it is indeed a great game. I played it years ago, when the servers were still up. Though i couldnt get online, needed some extra plug in thing for the ps2.

But the game is great, really tests your skills and your patience. Makes you learn to use what you got wisely. To only use stuff you need to get the job done. Tis why i dont pack bombs and traps on every quest in TRI, i learn to save them for bigger things :P

MH1 was my first MH game. I first played it... 6 years ago(or about a year after it came out)? It was so hard to me because I was not use to the 3rd person camera controls xP! I think I got to the first time u could fight a veloc(jaggi) before I quit xD! Then about 3 years ago I got bored and tried it again... and I was 12 then so I was a far better gamer. I loved the Hack & Slash style because I loved destruction by then xP. Just I never realy got hooked because back then I was more of a RPG geek.

I think I made it to ian and started farming for plates before I gave up... and if u think u farm alot in tri... u will be in a world of hurt in MH1 xD! I never did go online... didn't have that attachment. It also needed to be pluged into the modem so there was no way that would work.

About a month later we moved and I lost MH1. I would recomend buying it... but if your just starting on tri then MH1 will be alot harder. There is no LS, SWAXE, or Custom Bow Guns in MH1 either. Oh, and evading and weapon controls has come a long ways... so u may need to mash some buttons unlike in tri.

the game actually doesnt look to much different graphic wise. MH was a rather advanced game for the PS2 i believe. Some hitboxes were more ... eh! ... then, course i think that wasnt perfected until tri >.>

Just .. when hunting a big monster, dont try standing around its feet. You will get tripped and trampled quite constantly.

Just like the guy that posted earlier, I am too a "hardcore" MH1 player, or was, i played it almost everyday, most fun game back then. Until the servers shut down....i feel bad for the people who just started the game at the time

ahh i remember the old days of mh1 online, many things from there never passed on to other mhs, like "claw day" and headlocking, which btw headlocking was one of the most fun things ever, also it is still possible in tri, get a sky scraper or the ala lance, and do it against a ian (offline only) quite fun i kill her in about 2 mins each time doing it, and when you would see a purple quest note thingy everyone would be like 0.0. Also clusting the fatalis was the only way to kill him, because of green sharpness being the highest, you cant pierce its armor, and the kirin actually being an extremely hard monster, because it had 1 hit kills with its thunder, Oh and my favorite sword from that game, the GMR Chrome Heart, that sword was cool, too bad it was only in that game and you can only get it with the event quest with the diabloses, Also, the thing i will always remember is trying to get los plates, i probably spent at least 40% of my hours on that, but idc, id choose mh1 over any other mh any day (as long as the servers were up) lol, but the closest youll get to mh1 is mhG or mh freedom 1. I Still miss the old maps and music, they did return in mhf2 and mhfu, and stayed in mhf but it just wasnt the same. Which btw, some swords in that game appear to be longswords, but theyre great swords, also, dual swords were the best, i was a master at them, i was quite mad to find out tri didnt have them

Then i lost my internet for a month, once it was back, i came home from school excited to play online again, just to figure out the servers were down...worst day ever. Now i will never be able to go online again to hear that song (song name is The Gathering) when youre choosing to either go into red, blue, or green town.

i still even remember that everyone was mostly in red town. although there was only like 500 people (max) on a day, it was still good enough to play with many different people. I wish that online town (minegarde) would return in a future mh, i want to at least want to walk around it one more time.

Anyways, buying the game is worth it, not much to do offline, but it still does have its own stuff that other monster hunters dont. but be aware, going from tri to the first, is a huge change. Quicker stamina depletion, no farm, that annoying thing when you have to have the required items for a weapon or sword in your pouch to make it, not in your box, and attacking is with the analog stick, also evading is alot different, for example, when you slam your hammer after a charge, you cant evade right after that, you gotta wait till he picks it up. getting many items is difficult offline, you have to either gather, carve, or make alot of common items, like potions, wyvern claws ect. But there is that one thing that is in all monster hunters, you can only get dragon element weapons online. Too bad you cant get the badass looking classic fatalis armor, it looked awesome to me.

anyways i talk to much, get it anyways, its nice to collect.

Try ebay to buy it, i doubt youll find it at a game store, considering there werent many copies released in the west
