So, after completing my Vangis armor, I felt like making a gunner set. However, having no experience even holding a bowgun, i'm not sure where to start. I was thinking of being a status gunner with Bnahabra+ with Barioth+ Helm/Cap and Barioth+ Greaves for evasion. I'm not really sure about the Bowgun itself, though

Okay, first off- and I have the math on my side- Status attack up IS NOT needed as a gunner... So its just a waste and wont help you anyway. If you want to status gun you need recoil +2, this will allow you to fire ANY status shot recoiless, which is essential, especially if you plan pit, paralyzing or some strategy that requires you to status on demand.

Now as for the gun set up for status I reccomend Jhen, though I dont really sleep status that often so I use a mix of devil's grin and and Thundacrus rex< I think? Sorry Im away atm, otherwise I would check. Anyway this set gets you 4 para lv2 and a decent amount of pierce, which, in case you dont know, is essesntially the general damage shot.

Of course if you dont plan of status gunning, or decide you dont like it, or perhaps you suck... I would sugggest you go stout horn farming for the Blos+ gunner set. Its the set you want if you use pierce ammo, and IMO the best way to gun. For certain monsters anyway...

All in all gunning requires just as specific sets as Blademasters.

Heres a link to get you started...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/943655-monster-hunter-tri/faqs/59978

This guy is pretty good, though it should be noted that Dragon S IS affected by ELE attack up. Vamp himself has said that it is a possibility.

Okay so Im starting to ramble, just excited to help a new gunner!

PS Vangis isnt an AWFUL gunner set, but theres better... You just have to decide if the resources required to make it are worth it...

Thanks for reading!

you will always need recoil+2, all the rest depends on which status you want to use. status attack up is not required but useful anyway. it is, really, it means if you mess up a bit and need a few extra seconds to shoot you won't msis a paralyze because of tolerance recover.

anyway, are you sleepbombing?

you want recoil+2, load up, bombardier and trapmaster, whatever else you can get is a nice extra. The best gun for the job is bari frame/jehn barrel/ala stock.

you are using paralyze?

recoil+2, loa up and trapmaster are still necessary, however considering the gun is usually slow reload one you'll want reload speeding up skills. i'm a bit rusty here and don't remember the exact gun i used but i am a fan of heavy bowgun barrel here, it allwos you to also load paralyze level1 shots.

Right! And it should be noted that the ATP of the BG isnt important if you plan on being a "pure" status gunner. As opposed to a gunner that uses exhaust or pierce or something. Just know that without a team with a halfway decent handle on the game, you are obsolete.

And Quidam, status attack up really doesnt help you enough to be worth it. If you would like I can dig up the thread I found where someone actually did the math.

i do my own math and i consider it a useful skill but i'm open for discussion.

it doesn't help you on a perfect run but perfection isn't easily found lying around. that's where status attack up cna make a difference between a wasted run and a run you can sort of set back on tracks. my point is: every few seconds monsters recover status tolerance, if you're fast it doesn't matter (and you should be) and that's why recoil, reload and load up are priorities. however if for any reason you are slow sometimes you will need 1-2 extra shots because you allowed the monster to recover. status attack up is just enough generally to make up for such mistakes as long as they aren't too big.

I completely agree with you, however it all boils down to necessity and really, its not. It's not becuase when compared to other skills like trapmaster, bombadier, recoil +2, load up, it just doesnt stack up with the competing skills.

I guess I would compare status attack up to razor sharp. Sure its nice, but when instead you could have sharpness +1 it just isnt worth it.

Anyway, Im not trying to prove you wrong or anything, since MH is notorious for giving as less information to its players as possible, sending them into a never-ending arguement with one another.

Here's the thread if you are interested...

Without SAU it takes 4 Para 2 to para it the first time. [50+50+50+50=200]
With SAU it still takes 4. [56+56+56+56= 224]

say that you shoot 3 bullets, then get roared or hit by a minion or whatever and about 10 sec passed since the first bullet? you suddendly need 5. the 24 extra would have saved you that.

my set for paralyze would generally be recoil+2, trapmaster, load up and status up and it works just fine. i get the skill and don't miss anything i need.

I didnt do the math myself, therefore I wont argue anything to do with it.

But again, necessity.

Status attack up is next to worthless for a gunner since that at best amounts to an extra para/sleep or w/e.

Recoil down+2
Load up
Trap master

anything else you can fit in is all you need if you're support gunning

fitting status up as 4th skill is just easy <_<

stop complaining people, status attack up is just as marginally useful as attack up skill is: it will only make your quest a few swings shorter.

Well, after making the ingot+ gunner set (Only just to test if I would like gunning) and I actually really enjoy gunning, So i'm making Low rank Diablos set and overforging it although i'm not sure what to put as the faulds and legs >.<

The discussion has been so heated up I'm actually ashamed of myself for wanting to ask if Jhen Frame (EDIT: Or was it Bari?)/Jhen Barrel/Chaos Wing would make a good all around status gun. But I've just done that anyway.

I mean, being able to load 5 Para Lvl 2 and 5 Sleep Lvl 2 iirc, with 3 Exhaust S as an extra (all of these counting Load Up already), isn't all that bad, is it? :Ç

Ingot is fairly easy to gem to be an exceptional status set, also you look pretty cool, which is an added bonus. Though, compared to uragaan EVERYTHING looks cool.

Anyways, about the faulds and what not...

Its a pretty common sight to see a pierce gunner with alloy+ faulds and gobul leggings, its just a way to get crit eye. I would link sets and stuff but, forgive me its late and im lazy...

But of course since youre still fresh as a gunner you could always use some barioth to get evade, which is always nice...

Oh, it should be noted that for pierce Crit > Attack up. Unless of course youre using adrenaline. Which I doubt you will be anytime soon.

Heres mine, happened to be in my tabs...
http://divinewh.im/s/2.L.f_1W_1c_1V.g.f_1f.N_1J.N_z.Q.1B

PS If I seem bias towards pierce, ITS BECAUSE I AM. Status is nice, just not as practical.

Well, yes and no.

I say yes beacuse, yeah the specs are decent.

I say no because, youre gun should change depending on your stategy/monster.

Theres really no pont to having all those sleep shots is there? I mean do you plan on sleep bombing EVERY monster you encounter? But, of course your intention is to find the catch-all status gun.You just gotta remember that its a heavy bowgun, but besides that its pretty good. Just be sure to pack some dragon shot and crag lv 3 in case you run out of status.

I hope that was helpful, Id write more but my eyes are closing...

Haha yes, sir, it was. Thank you. But my intention is not a catch all gun. I thought of Jho mostly. I mean, even if we're not sleep bombing there might be a GS user around. That could be put to some use, right?

The intention is just a set that can cripple an endgame monster in two (maybe three) ways rather than one.

Okay, well if you want to cripple a monster in more than two ways you should invest some skill points in trapmaster.

Normally when im statusing jho WITH A COMPETENT TEAM I'll sleep bomb him once or twice, then wear him down with some pierce or something, maybe crag or exhaust. When hes drooling Ill flash him, shock trap him, pit, paralyze. Repeat the traps and paralyze status.

Anyway my point in relaying that to you is to show that to make status work on endgame monsters you NEED to cripple a monster in multiple ways. But in the end it really just boils down to how good your team is. I for one, dont really like to rely on others that much and tend to just do a round of the aforemention strategy and then move on to pierce.

Urgh, giving status gunning advice is difficult since its all so circumstantial...

Anyways, this is my status set that I use for... status...

http://divinewh.im/s/1_1v_1S.o_X.17_1T.o.S_1R.o_p.1F.o.o

Aaaannnnddd the gun I use for jho...

Thundacrus Rex Frame
Devil's Grin Barrel
Chaos wing stock

Its pretty good for the run I mentioned before, enough para shots to get him locked up quickly, the sleep shots are good for a sleep or two, the exhaust clip size is just INSANE- should get him drooling in no time, and of course, my babies, the pierce shots. Ive tried other gun set ups, but I like this one the most.

And please, if I didnt answer your question, or completely misinterpreted it, tell me! I love to help!

At the moment I'm using
Barioth frame
Deviljho barrel
Alatreon stock
This gives me lots of pierce s and is normally a sleep bombing set but since I have no general use set I use this all around, surprisingly good though!
I can load exhaust s, and para s lvl 2 and pellet level 3, but no crag and clust

Pros: Its got a good affinity, wihch is helpful for pierce. The clip size for sleep shots are decent, though I cant see the need for a huge clip unless you plan a speed run. And actually, unless you mistakenly put down the wrong parts, it has 2 crag lv3 shots. The two para lv2 shots are nice too.

Cons: Its heavy, theres deviation, pellet lv 3 is a joke and pierce lv3 wont out damage levels one or two unless its used on an uragaan or world eater.

Its just my opinion (which is often wrong) but I dont think this gun is all that great ESPECIALLY if you use it as just a general set type thing. I mean, you could pull off a decent exclusive sleep bomb on jho, or ala... But outside of that it isnt all that general usey...

Oh, and it should be noted that the low clip size of para lv2 would make it difficult to trap para after a paralyze or two...

But I'm just starting on a new set, so hopefully itll be better. Yah I meant to say that it can't do crag s lvl 1 but can do lvl 3, but was too lazy to edit. And Im out (I think it was) of bomb arowanas.

That was golden piece of advice. Thank you, man! I had completely forgotten about Trapmaster. It's too bad my Trapmaster charm doesn't have the two slots, but it seems I can live without TrunderRes +10 in favor of Bombardier. Other than that, I think I'll be copying you a little, wahaha~!

I must admit, though, I don't know how to pierce. I've read guides and I've seen videos but I can't seem to get the hang of it. I mean, my experience with it comes mostly from arena quests, but still.

And it's just that I love it when a good status gunner is in the room, so I want to give this feeling to people here, there and everywhere. I do want to try to improve my skills at piercing and maybe clusting, too.

Funny you should mention Adrenaline, actually. I made the Black leather pants yeasterday and gave them a try. Still not sure what faulds to use, though.

On another note, that horn that the greaves give you is hilarious. How you can hold things with that on your hand is beyond me xD
