So I have decided to start learning to lance. Are there any suggestions for a newb lancer as far as good skills and what is a good one to start with?

In my opinion this is the best lancing guide around, so study up, this also shows some good armor sets to use and what the best lances are.

As far as which lance or lances to make, I have to say I love my Banderlance Byakko; it was great when it was an MLOO1 Baltzenger, before I upgraded it. It comes from the event quest "Blood Sport", which is an Uragaan and a Diablos in the arena. I wouldn't recommend that you do it solo, at least at first, because at least for me, it was a pain in the rear. But so, so worth it.

My memory of what lance I used when, and when I could access the next one is a little fuzzy, but I recently had to make the Babel Spear +, as soon as I hit HR 30 because I needed the higher attack to be able to solo the Rathian +. I didn't have the upgraded thunder one because I haven't done Ceadeus offline yet.

Oh, and I nearly forgot -- the Tusk Lance+ from Barioth parts is a must-have, to my mind.

I really enjoyed the "Sharq Attack" lance, and I still use it occassionally. That one is fun and comes from the "Alluring Dress" event quest, which you have to do without armor or talismans.

I was not at all impressed with the Spiral Lance+. I liked the Sharq much better at the time (even though it has much lower raw the sharpness and element made up for that--and the shorter lances are easier for me to aim), and recently, I haven't had occassion to use the Spiral at all. There's always a better option for me, it seems. YMMV, of course.

I had trouble learning the lance. In the beginning, I carted again and again to the G.Jaggi offline. My biggest problem was timing putting it away, because it takes about a year to put it away, leaving me vulnerable for like...ever. The other problem was just getting used to hitting the evade button and hopping back rather than rolling. I kept hitting the stick out of habit, which would make my character turn around (the opposite of what I wanted) and I'd end up hopping right into attacks. Without fail. Every &@#! time. Alot of people have had trouble with these types of things, but I think alot of people also are able to adjust quicker than me.

It was worth it to focus hard and not give in to feeling discouraged. For me, for a while, it was no longer about beating the monsters...it was about conquering the darn lance.

That guide that you were referred to was my best friend for a while.

I like Agnaktor armor for the guard, I like Lagi armor for the elemental attack up and razor sharp, and I think if I ever get the hang of hopping through attacks, I'll like the Barioth for evade.

So there's my $.02.

Auto guard makes you block whenever it is possible. Basically, not recoiling or attacking, weapon drawn, faced the right way (can't say for sure about the last one).

Basically, never use it. You'll come to depend on it, but you don't need it. If you just press the block button whenever a monster attacks, it'll do the exact same thing. And it'll take up your talisman, which is lame. With a minute of good practice, you won't ever need it anymore, so get rid of it.

It's worth 200 z's. Feel rich.

Biggest thing to get use to with the lance is that you don't roll. Instead you hop step to the side or straight back. Takes some getting used to so do some offline training until you are comfortable with this new mechanic.

Unless you are using wiimote it's a pain to counter lance with wiimote I can do it but I am not nearly as effective like when I had classic controller. Personally I say learn to counter and evade if you know both you are almost never going to get hit oh and on a side note do NOT and I repeat do NOT lance charge that will only get you raged on I am guilty of raging on anyone who lance charges.

Practice these drills. Just doing them a couple of times gives you a real feel of how to move.

Low, Low, High; Repeat
Low, High, Hop; Repeat
Stab, Left, Left, Left, Stab, Right, Right, Right, Stab, Back, Back, Back; Repeat
Stab, Stab, Stab, Left, Stab, Stab, Stab, Right,, Stab, Stab, Stab, Back; Repeat
About Face, Hop, Hop, About Face, Hop, Hop; Repeat
Draw Stab, Stab, Stab, Back, Back, Sheath, Run (to another Kelbi); Repeat

dat charge is good for movement although, especially underwater, not as an attack of course.

Waittaminute...

I thought High-High-High-Counter (or closest thing to it) did more damage than low strikes?

True but add a lance charge oh it is so much worse though I toll my friends with the lance charge but I won't ever use it in a serious run

If this in regards to the drills I posted. The drills are to help you get the feel of how to move with the Lance. How far does the lance reach? Do far do you step when you poke? How fast do you move when you hop. How's the drain on your Stamnia? They are not about maximizing damage. Knowing how to move and the reach of your Lance are the first and hardest things to overcome.

H, H, H, Counter does the most damage. However you have to be practically touching the monster to hit with High. A Back Hop puts you out of reach for a High, but not out of reach for a Low. (It'll be a while before the player gets comfortable using Side Hops.) Also L, L, H is very good for heads. When a monster growls/roars they lower their head (low) then pull it back up (high). Or if the monster has a naturally low head (Ian, Los) you catch their flinch with a High.
