PostNew to MH Forum, and new to MH gaming, I would really appreciate some play tips.

Just popping in to say hi, and that I am new to this forum and the MH series. I am starting with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the 3DS, and as I get more into the game I am considering picking up and Wii-U and MH for that as well.

I am interested in any tips any one has for one of the three builds I am currently playing/experimenting with. I am rotating between a Dual Blades, Gun Lance, and Bowgun character. My Bowgun build is my newest build and so I have yet to decide 100% on light or heavy so I am looking for tips and info on both.

Thank you in advance for anyone who takes the time to leave me tips or links to pages they think might help me out.

Welcome to the forums, I hope you enjoy your stay.

As for the Dual Blades/Gunlance set, I recommend having Razor Sharp as a must, as these weapons will loose sharpness easily, Dual blades lose it easily because you're using 2 blades and your attacking quite quickly and often, Gunlance... that chews up sharpness with shelling and Wyvernfire blasts, so razor sharp/sharpness+1 are must have skills... as for bowgun, I don't really gun until I'm endgame, and seeing that I'm not there, I can't help you with that, so maybe someone with more knowledge may help.
Thanks for the tip, now I can keep a look out for Razor Sharp as a skill tree.
Welcome to the community.

If you are going for gunner, and are going to be playing solo (assumption based on you having a 3DS), then your best bet is to focus on light gunning. While heavy gunner can have a shield, and with guard up and guard+ you can withstand almost anything, MH is more an avoidance game. The light gunner's power comes from it's multi-shot capabilities, so make sure you are aware of what shots it can shoot in succession.

For small monsters, and small bosses, like the Jaggies, spread-shot is your friend. For large bosses, you get much more bang for your buck from pierce shots.

Spread shots are for close-up battle. About 2-3 rolls away from a monster. Pierce shots are for distance fighting, about 4-5 rolling distance from a monster. Pierce shots hit multiple times as it goes through the monster, so a small monster will not get hit as often. All elemental shots function like pierce shots btw.

Some skills that I concider a must for gunners are: reload and recoil. My motto is: the faster you can get out of the way and continue shooting, the better.
Sephastus, thank you that is really helpful info for a gunner, and about ammo. It will go a long way towards determining what resources I focus on gathering when gathering.
here are some simple tips that can help anyone, no matter what:
If it is gonna attack, dodge
If it is gonna dodge, attack
don't be afraid to use traps
cutting tails means tails won't hit you any more! SO CUT TAILS.
The moment a monster makes ONE MISTAKE, use it, and use it well.
It is best to heal when you AREN'T in the same area as the monster!
STOP SPAMMING SPIRIT COMBOS.
always remember to have a meal before you go out to hunt.
need materials for armor? then grind, it is the only way.
If there is a weapon that can be made with mats you have access too, make it.
mats=materials
nobody likes the plesioth.

there, that should do!

thats pretty much it except monsters dont really dodge without attacking.
also for heavy gunning you could use clust shots to speed kill everything and i mean EVERYTHING.
also(2) it is healthy to keep track of how many ragequits you have in a year, and if you havent, wait for the five star quest diablos please and then rant about it. i hope you enjoy the ride.

once I was fighting a nargacuga, and it jumped backwards, I hit it with the last spirit combo attack and broke its head, when it was flinched thanks to that attack I cut its tail, that's where I got the 'attack when it dodges' thing
