I think he was drawing the Tigrex out of the jungle and into the trap that the gunner had planned out. And he did do the "jump on it's back" thing. Definitely never got the impression he was running scared from Tigrex (unlike MHF2), since in the beginning, the hunter was obviously stalking it.
