Mohran Frustration..

I tell you, the beast is MOCKING me.

No, I am nott alking about the event quest. No, I am not talking about High Rank guild or G-Rank or whatever else. I am talkign about the village version. I wouldn't bother with a kill, really, but seeign I need a wooping 5 gems from the beast for my next armor, things got a little.. personal.

I tried slime.
I tried gemming Artillery Expert, along with Bombardier, Felyine Bombardier and Pyro. (Yes, alla t once.) and relying on the ships weaponary and bombs. ( Went terribly wrong, I even lost that mission. )
I tried my upgraded dragon bow.
I tried Edelweiss, both with pierce and the fully charged Rappid.
I tried spending as much time as possible on it's back attacking th cracks as I did piercing his legs and tusks on the ship.

Best I can manage is a repell sof ar. And It ell you, it is maddening that I cannot even tell how close the *beep* is to just fall down and die.

And before someone runs in and tells me to go get a melee weapon.. NO. I went through years and several generations of being a proud archer, I will not break with tradition yet.

So.. venting done. Feel free to share your ideas or what I might be doing wrong.

Hate to say, but I just don't think the damage for a bow is good enough to solo the beast. I've done it pretty easily with melee weapons... I don't know much about bows, but I bet you could manage it with a good pierce set and a heavy bowfin with good raw and plenty of room for pierce shots.

cant you hit the inside of the mouth with bow? im sure that's where i see most bowgunners aim.

27000 HP is not something easily doable with a bow in 30 minutes. Dragonators = 1,000 damage a piece, cannon = 500 hp a shot, 10-15 shots per quest, 100 hp per Ballista x 40, which still leaves you with around 16,000 damage to do with your bow alone. Dragon bombs do 500 damage a piece.

Contrary to popular belief, Dragon is not his main weakness... its ICE. Also, his weakest spot is inside his mouth. Since this is hard to do while you are still in the boat moving, focus exclusively on his Fin. As a ranged fighter, you can constantly barrage him from a safe distance. Just make sure to use the Gong and Binding Ballistas to prevent him from hitting your boat.

It will not be an easy fight to do 16000+ damage in the time alloted for a ranger, but it is doable. The repel is guaranteed though, as long as you do about 10k total damage before the timer is up... but a kill... good hunt to you.

Edit: also, if you are going to try elemental Ice, try to get spread shot spam to his fin. Else, get an elemental pierce and aim for it's face... the shots will make their way into the weak area.

Dragonator = 255 damage per layer
ballista = 30 damage per spear (2 spears per ballista ammo)
Cannon = 120 damage

Overall you're not doing crap with ship weapons on mohran's massive 27000 life. You're better off just using Dios Slicers+ and breezing through it.

Doesn't surprise me that sephastus is wrong as usual though.

Yep, Haruno is right. 4 x 255 does not equal 1000 on average, Ballistas with artillery expert will not reach close to 100 and of course my advise on trying to help him out in his prefered method of fighting by telling him the weakness was off as well. /sarcasm

I was off in cannon damage because I was looking at the wrong numbers when I looked at an FAQ.

Doing a kill is easier by going blademaster, but he specifically asked to do it with a bow. Bows can do damage while Jhen is not close enough for blademaster, so it is still feasable to take Jhen down with good planning using a ranged fighter.

I really want to know where you're getting your damage values haruno. I haven't found anything for 3G/3U yet and MHP3rd has ballista damage listed at 40x2 per shot and 170 for cannons.

The other thing to consider is that these weapons ignore a monsters hitzone defense and only factor in the overall defense.

Again, just some points needing clarification if you've got some source for your info please share it as I would love to read up on it.

I'm with you on this one OP. I've been meaning to try and solo Jhen using bow. I always seem to push it back. I'm hoping to get some practice in on H.Jhen with a new fire bow set I got to get the feel of using the bow on him. Then I'll try to take one on by myself. I definatley will use Pierce as that seems like the ideal skill to use, though I would love to try Spread or Rapid..

Yeah well solo HR Jhen with bow is very hard because he's just big fat cow with ton of HP.

Sry for bringing this up again, i know he asked about HR Jhen, but i tried to solo G rank Jhen again today. Big fail, he destroyed the ship again. Same result - 20 min left to the end... i used fully upgraded Dios GS. I made 2 holes on his back, everything was going well till the final showdown...

The bad thing is that i need it's parts for jhen X armor, to build some crazy GS sets.

So if I get onto his back, I should be able to blast the cracks on his fin open rather fast with Rapid, no?

What else do I have.. material for two sets of bombs.
A few farcaster to quickly port back down from his back when it gets thin.
Drugs. (Duh.)
Bounce Bombs to throw into his face.
Mega Dash Juice.
Power & Armor talon. (Duh.)
Shrooms and vials to make more power ammo.

Cha-Cha with his fake felyine mask.. and Kayamba on his ancient mask. Not like they are of much use in this anyway..

Well, 'tis about as much as I can do now I'd say. Let's see how this turns out...

I was looking at that damage break down chart a while ago (when I got to Jhen in the village quests)

One thing I wasn't sure of was exactly which bit is the fin, I'm pretty sure they mean the fin down it's spine, with the 2 weak spots being the places to hit for, but then wondered if they meant his back fins (it does have a couple of small fins towards the back of it's body)

So I did a run and concentrated on those little back fins, managed to repel at least, then another concentrating on it's spine/fin, worked much better

Just gonna add this little note in here: Put gatherer on the shakas. They'll gather ballista and cannon ammo more often, and I don't believe it subtracts from the total. Add rocketeer skill if the mask has room too and they might actually help with damage. And hey, the chance of extra carves if they survived at the end of the quest is a bonus.
