By adding friends to your list you will know when they are on and what games they are playing and be able to send short messages. If they are playing a multiplayer game you can connect to them and play as well.
When not in use or charging always leave your 3DS in sleep mode with wireless on. Only turn it off if you are changing the SD card.
This will not ware down your battery as many believe. Like Netflix when watching movies on it the sleep mode reduces the consumption of power significantly reducing the battery life use.
Also carry your 3DS with you.
You never know when someone will have a 3DS as well. You need to get thier streetpass to gain puzzle pieces and unlock new puzzles in the Mii plaza. Also you need their Mii for the Find Mii game which allows you to unlock new hats as you progress through the game.
Another important thing to know about the sleep mode is that if you have it and your wireless on you will get SpotPasses for amny games. This is additional content that can be recieved only by having a wifi connection and having your 3DS in sleep mode.
Walk your 3DS... The steps will earn you coins and allow you to unlock new features in some games. You can get 10 coins a day... 1,000 steps or shaking it 1,000 times. for a maxamum of 300 coins.
