| Ooooo... so the insect staff is more like a long range personal hunting horn. ^_^ I could get behind that. An evolving bug seems interesting too. I hope it is not too overpowered. | |

| A long-range, self-improving "hunting horn" that does cutting damage, mind you. That's an important difference.
If the insect upgrades are seperate from the staff upgrades... count me out. That would take way too much time & resources to upgrade as a main weapon. For fun, on the side? Sure.

| Personally, I would want more long range weapons placed into the game... something along the lines of huge boomerangs. The GS equivalent in ranged weapons... can be charged, and does massive continuous damage, but leaves the hunter vulnerable until it returns. Could also be used for blocking. Slow movement speed when out, and such. Would also have elemental affinities.
They could also have a class that focuses on fists, but that focuses on throwing items. Up close? get a few punches in, but for the mayority of the fight, they could be far away throwing stars, leaving caltrops on the floor, throwing knives or daggers ect ect... they would buy their assortment at the store, just like gunners buy their bullets there.
Just my ideas for ranged classes.

| One article I read on this news update stated that the actual insect does bullet-type damage to monster, in addition to optional elemental damage. You know, like bows.
So, by all means, this is a perfect fusion of long-range and close combat fighting. Cutting AND shot damage? Yes please. Sure, bows already do this (and bowguns have slicing s), but they mainly do shot damage and just have auxiliary cutting attacks. Insect Staff is kind of the opposite, with Hunting Horn buffs thrown in for good measure.

| Bullet type as in bowgun bullets or as in gunlance shells? Because i know the staff can attack from afar with bugs, but I didnt know it used bullets as well. To me gunlance type shellings sound possible, like you jump towards the monster, stab it and then BOOM | |

| Gunlance shells, crags, clusts, bombs, and various other things just do fixed damage. Shot-type damage is the kind that bowguns do with Normal S, Pellet S, Pierce S, etc. Of course, bows also do this kind of damage with their arrows.
In other words, the staff itself does regular cutting damage like LS, GS, SnS, etc. When you aim and shoot the bug at a monster, the bug bites the monster and does bullet or shot damage. It's a pretty sweet deal, really. Usually monsters have weaknesses to each type of damage on different parts, anyway.
The more I learn about Insect Staff, the more I think I... WILL be using one quite often. Still maining bows, though. Wish someone would translate the bow page at the MH4 website...

I don't think the bug does the shot damage however in one of the trailers you can clearly see the hunter firing a small projectile out of the staff itself. I imagine that is what would be doing the shot damage.

| I see. I must have misunderstood. That does make a lot more sense, however, that does mean the shot damage portion is probably very negligible. Even so, this weapon has grown on me. | |
