See topic.

My current MH4U hunter is a staff user who needs only to complete the three-star quest Fish Wish, and finish the two three-star Urgents (a Nerscylla hunt and a Basarios hunt) to go to four stars.

Currently, I wear a full set of Velociprey armor (Helm, Mail, Braces, Tassets, and Greaves) with the Auto-Guard +10 talisman.

The Velociprey armor set gives me AuS and Halve Stun.

Is there a set of armor you would recommend besides Velociprey that I could craft using mats that are currently available?

I never had to do a Basarios urgent and I'm already HR 4. I heard rumors about an Expedition urgent for Basarios but I never encountered it yet. Also don't worry about skills too much in low rank or early high rank. Mostly at this point you're still gonna want just defense to survive, skills are a bonus.

I've already know from playing Monster Hunter since MH3, "Strike first! Strike hard! No mercy, sir!" will simply get your character triple-carted.

Regardless of your weapon type, the game is about learning the patterns of the big guys; it is similar to something I learned regarding the Deathstroke fight in Arkham Origins - a hit with a weak weapon can do more damage than the most powerful weapon providing you know how to use the weapon and know where to strike your foe.

OK - right now, just focus on high defense; work on getting specific skills later.

No... please no.

Defense should only be for in the rare cases you get hit, that you don't get outright one shotted.

You should focus on learning the monster moves and avoiding them. If a monster is too hard, just move around WITHOUT attacking, but staying within striking distance of the monster. Do this for several minutes... even a full hunt if you have to, until you learn how and when the monster attacks. Be conservative, and strike only when you are sure you are not going to get hit. Once you know how to do damage without becoming a target, then you can be more aggressive in your attacks.

ALWAYS go for skills above defense. If you are getting hit too hard, get armor spheres and upgrade your current full set (which gives you usable skills), until the hits don't kill you outright.

100% agree with Seph on this. Skills should be one of your main concern when making any gear (second to looks of course). You can always upgrade armor to get better defence but better skills that a different story. Yes you'll want to get better armor as you go through the game and from low to high to G the defence will naturally go up. But higher defence doesn't always mean better armor.

dcj, wasn't the MHWF account for "official" stuff?

Anyway - yeah, focus more on upgrading your armor. Velociprey is good stuff. If you can, gem that Stun Halved into Stun Negated.

I've run a mixed low-high rank Gore Magala set against a high rank Gore Magala, and although its attacks hurt, I can hit back really hard too, especially since I have Sharpness +1 and Challenger +2.

It is and usually if you see mo post from MHWF it's because I was working on something at the time of posting.. Namely in this case the issues with the chatbox.

Back to subject. with a staff user would skills for mounting and overall damage with mounting attacks as well as kinsect boosts be the best skills for a Bug Stick user? I havent gotten that far due to lack of time but I know there are several skills geared towards that..

The Kinsect has it's own set of skills, so no need to worry about boosting it with armor skills. Ride Master isn't all that necessary as long as you keep the Red Buff, so I'd mainly go with Attack Up and other damage increasing skills.

We might have to agree to disagree, but the mentality of "just go for highest defense" will breed a slew of hunters that get to high rank, and have no idea why they keep getting carted, or that are a hindrance to other hunters while online.

But since I haven't done those studies, you can consider it my educated guess.

As for armor sets, there are many more, and easier to get armor sets early on. Specially if you are not going blademaster, like that post assumes.

I went straight from the initial set to the Yian Kut-Kut set, and that has served me well till high rank. I also made the allow set for gunner, to pair with the Khezu BG, and some relic armor/relic weapon sets as well.

Back on topic though, the skills you chose to get should be in line with what your weaknesses are.

^ what if you have no weaknesses?

*MHWF smiles and points at himself

Seriously though. I've not gotten to far in the game yet, just got to the Volcano city and completed several missions there. So far all I've upgraded any was my weapon and am still wearing the armor they give you at the start of the game. I haven't really seen a point in changing it yet as the given challenges don't seem that difficult yet. At the moment only the Elderwood outing and their respevtive guild quests have seemed overtly challenging. That could be due to the ammount of monster that appear one right after the other though.

Though I have gotten some interesting relic gear with nice skills I may start using.

I like using Tigrex with Rathalos Gloves. Can easily get Attack Up XL with that set. And also Gluttony, but mainly AuXL :P
