Play MHFU Locally with my Friend (It dosnt work)

So I've been playing MHFU for quite awhile and my friend just recently got a PSP and MHFU and so we tried playing together locally. We did the wireless hookup thing whatever you call it and we met in the gathering hall of course. But it didn't work, we had multiple issues: Like he could see me but I could only see his name, we started a quest buy nether of us could join each other, we couldn't accept friend card thingy, we even tried to do the training thing together and that wouldn't work either. Now I must add that my PSP is not the best... its a piece of junk so that might have something to do with it, we both googled this problem and couldn't find anything, anyone know how to help us we would really appreciate it.

I've played locally with a friend several times. It isn't complicated. 

Online Gathering Hall > Gathering Hall 01

If you both go there you can play with each other. If it doesn't work, it's a problem on your PSP's end.
