| I am considering using my Barroth mats to upgrade my Rugged Great Sword into a Carapace Sword.
However, I see the Carapace Sword has a -30% affinity.
Is there a way to "gem out" that -30% Affinity with the five slots of the Qurupeco Armor or the six slots of the Jaggi Armor?
BTW, I am currently fighting Gobul - I don't have access to Tundra or Volcano mining items.

| Also, if I cannot "gem out" the negative affinity, is the Carapace sword worth it? | |

| Edit yer posts instead of doubleposting.
For Critical Eye+3 you'd need enough for CE+2, and at least 5 slots. So not really, no. In any case, it DOES end up in the Barroth Smasher, which is a good GS despite its -50% affinity, but there are better choices, both power and sharpness-wise. Try going for the Sieglinde series (Giant Jawblade -> Golem Blade -> Valkyrie Blade -> Sieglinde). I reccomend Sieglinde P, as it's the best GS apart from Deviljho's and Alatreon's.

| Well Jake, the negative affinity on your weapon isn't caused by a skill, so you can't really gem it out. The best you could do is get the skill Critical eye +3 to counteract the negative affinity.
As for whether the weapon itself is worth it, if you don't yet have access to the tundra, then it is a good upgrade for the time being, unless you are willing to wait to conserve resources. After the tundra you have access to the Chieftan's Great Sword, which upgrades even further to the Lagiacrus' Great Sword series, which is the only series of Great Sword that has the thunder element, and pretty handy up until you can get anguish from deviljho.

| Like said previously, make the giant jawblade. It is easy to forge, more attack than rugged, and leads down a great weapon upgrade path. | |

| I just looked, and I am going with the Giant Jawblade.
BTW, I have not made a Carapace Sword, and I probably will not!
I just looked at the line the Carapace Sword becomes, and this is the junk it turns into
Carapace Sword: has -30 Affinity Carapace Blade: has -30 Affinity Barroth Wedge: has -30 Affinity
finally
Barroth Smasher: has -50 Affinity
I'd burn all my slots to counter the -30 Affinity, and I cannot remove the -50 Affinity.

| I remember a thread a long time ago debating the worth of affinity. I believe the results were for weapons like Lance, SnS and LS, it's worth looking at, and to make sure you don't have a -%. However, for slow hitting weapons like the GS, which most of its DPS comes from one massive strike at a time, its not really that big of a deal.
But yeah, regardless of whether that's correct or if I remembered wrong, there are just plain better Great Swords to go for. Namely the Sieglinde. Best LR GS you can get IIRC.

You seem to be describing elemental properties. The only recent discussions on affinity to challenge the damage formula have all been relating to the actual activation rate vs the displayed percent. Nothing statistically relevent came of any of the discussions I read that disagreed with the traditional thoughts on affinity. Sieglinde Siegmund Golem Blade+ Ancient Blade and Lagia Lightning (R) Are all good LR GS's. The first three come from the giant jawblade path. Sieglinde is highly favored for its ease of upgrading at 4* online into a GS which will last you until Anguish (p).

| On my alt (goes by this account name, incidentally) I decided to focus only on GSs and Hammers. I made the Barroth weapons for both just for completeness' sake. And you were right not to make it, as it is bad and should feel bad about it. | |
