Any way around local multi-player region lock?

Hi I'm new hear, not sure if I'm putting this in the right place.

A friend and I want to play the MH3U game while I'm on vacation here in the Caribbean. He has the American console with the American game, while I have the European versions, long and behold we could not get the games to recognize each other. Is there any way to work around the local wireless region lock?

Also I should include, we don't have access to a Wii-U.

Moved to the appropriate section, Since you're new here, I'd like to suggest that there is an edit button, just letting you know as it would save yourself double posting :P

With the WiiU version of the game, you can play in Network mode with the NA/EU servers as they have removed region lock, however with the handhelds, I'm not sure
