Using the vita to play mh

Hello, I've recently been craving MHFU and thought that with its re-release on the Vita there's now a reason to buy one but i wanted to know if a PS3 was still required to play it online with a friend,
...and also, can it be played locally with an older PSP?

I'm sorry if this has been posted before but all the info i found deemed that the vita was similar the PSP as far as online went, which didn't seem right /sad/

You can play locally, and yes if you want to use Ad-Hoc Party, you will need a PS3.

idk i tried to do it i hae mhfu on the vita but when i tried i got into multiplayer but got no servers

I am using Vita and connected online using xlink kai, with the ps vita's usb cable connected to the pc.
