First of all, learn the type matchups. This is probably THE most important thing to know.
An example of this would be Water > Fire, Dark > Psychic, Psychic > Fight.

A full chart can be found here (although it might be confusing for people new to the series, FireRed and LeafGreen had a handy help page with easy-to-read type matchups).
http://serebii.net/games/type.shtml

Next, choose your starter wisely. Some will give you an easier time throughout the game.

Chimchar gets you through the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th gym fairly easily. Also the 1st if you evolve him at lv16 (evolution is when a Pokémon meets certain requirements and changes into another form, it will be stronger but will learn moves later than the previous one).

That's my wall of text for now. I'll let others help, too.

PS. Don't forget to keep your Pokémon's levels around the same as the previous gym leader's. That always worked out for me.

Cool. Though I already started with Turtwig, but that shouldnt be such a big problem. Ill catch and train another Fire-type pokemon somewhere anyway.
Im mainly using Turtwig and im training Magikarp, he should evolve into a Gyarados, which is an awesome Pokemon my nephew told me. Also, he should be strong versus Chimchar, and my 'rival' is using this one. Is this good?

EDIT: I just took a look at that chart. I didnt even know so mucht types existed :/.
Do you guys recommend getting 6 strong Pokemon that cover most of the 'elements'?

No problem.
And for types, I usually go for whatever the hell Pokémon I think is awesome, while keeping a balance of types at the same time.

Right now in White, I've got Grass, Dark, Water, Rock and Fire/Psychic covered.
I'm hoping to get either a Wargle or Hydreigon as my last Pokémon. C:

My team is: Servine, Zorua, Tirtouga (nicknamed Leonardo after Leo in TMNT, lol), Boldore and Victini.

You should aim for a Flying and Water type, as one will let you fly places and the other cross bodies of water.

Oh, yes. Then Im good with magikarp, just looked op he evolves at level 20. Shoudnt be too hard to get him there. Already got a Starly, but thats a dumb Pokemon imho xD.
Ill have a look at Serebii, looks like a very nice site for Pokemon stuff :D.

Starly is a good pokemon, just a bit of a late shiner. Once you get it to lvl. 34, it will evolve into Staraptor, which is a flying/fighting type, IIRC... might just be a flying type...

'nyways, Staraptor is great for some attacks. I can't remember them though... you will have to ask one of the more advanced pokemon players :O.

Bibarel is a great HM slave, learning half of all the HMs.. I use Tropius for the other slave, but I don't think you can get Tropius that early/ at all. Also, It might not be the best idea to have 2 HM slaves that early in game, since it restricts you to 4 strong pokes, but for later on they're good.

Thanks for the help so far, im doing quite well, im already at the 5th gym, i got 3 good (i consider them my 'main' pokemon). They cover grass, fire and water, which takes cares of most enemies, though, i'd like one more pokemon which adds very well with these 3 (Grutle, Gyarados and Ponyta).
have you guys got any suggestions?

I usually keep a Rock type on my team. The great thing about Rock is that no matter what type the other pokemon is, a lot of times they have a Normal-type move, anyway.

by some simple form of elimination based on the damage chart sheet from yamatsu (this has been ultra useful, thank you very much), i came to the conclusion i would benefit most from my new pokemon being a bug/ghost type.
dp you guys happen to know one of those cause they dont seem to show very often :P

No, get a full team of 6. You'll be screwed over with just 2. Especially if they're only ghost/bug.

this was as addition to the 3 i already had (ponyta, torterra and gyarados).
6 maybe a bit much to keep all trained :/

My current team now is Torterra, Rapidash, Gyarados, Staraptor and im thinking bout training my Haunter. I was also trying to get Munchlax (evolves into Snorlax) using the Honey Trees but after slathering every tree available in Sinnoh and coming back 12 hours later the only pokemons i got were Combee, Aipom, Cascoon, Wurpmle and Burmy.

If you guys have got some good suggestions on useful Pokemons, go ahead.

evolve your haunter (trade it with someone then trade back)

and, torterra and staraptor are both weak to ice type moves, so watch out on the 7th gym (if you havnt got past it yet)

munchlax is really hard to get from the honey trees, its really rare. though getting an aipom, and a burmy is pretty lucky.

give your pokemon these moves or something like it lol

staraptor:
return (amazing power lol, and your staraptor should be fully happy) its a TM move
brave bird/ aerial ace (depends on if you dont mind the recoil from brave bird)

torterra:
earthquake XD will learn it by leveling up so no need to use the TM :D

gayrados (spelt correctly ;) lol jk):
waterfall, its a HM, though you only get it after the 8th gym
dragon dance, for epic stat raising

you'll get a strong pokemon pretty soonish ;)

edit: put up haunter on gts for trade, asking for something impossible so it isnt traded away. then exit the GTS, go back in and retrieve haunter and it should evolve (i think i remember the trick correctly)
