Known areas:
Spoiler:
Ancestral Steppe, Primeval Forest, Sunken Hollow, Frozen Seaway, Underground Volcano, Heavenly Mountain, Tower Top, Great Desert, Forbidden Grounds, Lava Island, Thousand Blade Mountain, Arena, 3D Arena, Old Desert
Unknown Great Forest (we will take a closer look at this one on it's own)
New mechanics in MH4U(these have also been addapted in Fronteir and were tested in other games prior to being added in the main series of MH. When asked Capcom Japan stated that a lot of the ideas had actually com from fans of the series in the west and tested in several games before being added into Monster Hunter, some of these were used in previous games such as the "lock on feature".)
Air attacks, weapon upswings leading into air attacks, environmental interaction (wall climbing/jumping ect.), Monster cling attacks (being able to hang on the monster for direct attacks)
Capcom stated that MH4U will include even more interaction with monsters, the environment and airial attacks over MH4 though did not go into detail.
Other additions:
Spoiler:
Capcom has stated that even though they have added a huge ammount of weapons and armors into MH4U they wanted to make the playability of Monster Hunter continue as well as the challenge continue long after you have collected everything. To do this they have added the Unknown Great Forest.
The Unknown Great Forest is basically 4's equivelant of 3's Moga Woods however it will have a huge change over anything seen in MH games before it to include the reward and Mining equipment, known as "Excavation Gear".
Unlike all other areas in the Monster Hunter series, the layout of the Unknown Great Forest is randomized, with the monsters, items, and terrain changing each time it is entered. You can save a particularly favorite map to play over and over again and share with others via streetpass and in Multiplayer session. Also each time the same map is beaten the level of difficulty as well as the rewards found within will increase in rarity.
Excavation Gear:
Armors can be from any monster from any game and will appear differently than their original design. The skills, slots, and defence will also be randomized (within peramiters).
This may mean you will end up with 3 Lagi Blademaster chests all different colors and all with different ammounts of slots and different skills. One may be really good and better than any of the actual pieces you had made from a quest monster while the others you may just want to sell off.
Trading:
In 4U there is an exstinsive trading system based on where you are at in the game.
The Wyverian Wholesaler can exchange monster materials that the players currently own for materials of monsters which are not available to be hunted in the game. These materials can be used to build various equipment from these monsters and may have improvements since their last game debut. In order to unlock the option to trade for these materials, certain conditions must be met in the form of completing Quests in the game.
Example: once you have cleared the correct 7:star: Guild quest you can trade a "Rajang's Tenacity" for a "Gaoren Thoracic"
There are many other new additions to MH4U over previous MH games, (I will add more later) if you have questions or would like to post a few or exspand on some yourself please do so.
It seemed to me that a lot of people didn't know just how much the game had actually been updated, though still a core MH game the amount to do has been really increased and Capcom has seemed to gone out of their way to keep people interested in playing and to keep them challenged.
Though much about 4U spacifically is still unknown and Capcom themselves have stated updates over 4U (even with 4 data being able to transfer to 4U in japan), those of us in the west should have a lot to look forward to early next year. If you have given up on MH or are getting a little worn out.. MH4U might be the time to give it one more go.
In the mean time here are some MH4 video's to show what we do know:
Spoiler:
Spoiler:
E3 2014 Treehouse gameplay 30 minutes
More updates: Several monsters now have an "additional" ragemode due to the Feral Wyvern virus giving them additional abilities when fighting them in later HR ranks.

Not directly related to MH4U, but does anyone know if we can take screenshots of games with the new 3DS, a la Wii U? Would be handy for sharing in-game info and bragging about amazing drops.

You can semi do that with a normal 3DS but only for miiverse so no not really I don't assuming they are going to change how the 3ds functions overall unless it's across all 3DS' not counting the improved performance and browser of the new 3ds.

^ actually several udates ago they added a Photo Share function. It's located in the same screen as the themes. You can post pictures to the nintedo site or facebook or twitter.
As far as miiverse, you can post pictures on the actual community for the game or on you own profile.
Many but "but not all" games allow you to take screen shots iether directly in the game or when you hit the 'Home" button and post that screen that you paused the game on.
Just FYI: MH4g in japan started with being able to post pictures onto miiverse but stopped it a month or so after. Right now it seems Capcom will not be restarting screen captures in japan or the west.

I just keep thinking of this, but I would wish for Amatsumagatsuchi to be added as a DLC content monster.

Amatsu is a terrible monster though that never really did much of anything or was any sort of memorable though. I'd rather see us get some frontier Monsters, Alatreon again, Dhisufiroa (Mature Alatreon from Frontier), Raviente, or even Lavasioth again.

What are you talking about!? Ama is awesome! Jeez...he's different. I mean come on!!! The best thing would be to be able to ride that thing like a bronco!!! Nova you are insane. Ama or nothing for me. Screw Frontier. It's never happening for the West.

Put amatsu in water. He functions like almost every leviathan in mh3. A far more passive one to boot.

That would be ruining the gimmick of the monster though. He/She is the master of wind and rain. All they really need to do is up the health, give it a wind barrier that deflects attacks like Kushala Daora and give it some new moves and Ama will appeal to the nutso elitists that have too much time on their hands. Of course I have always thought normal Ama a challenge though. Besides Ama's design is the coolest most alien looking design. It'd be a shame for Westerners to never see it ever.
P.S. I want its armor! It looks so cool! That and it's been ages since I've hunted an Ama.

Then have kushala daora no offense but all you seem to want is a kushala daora functionally speaking. Amatsu is fine for what it's worth but I would not put it in the same light as something like kushala daora, teostra, lunastra, or even alatreon. You said it yourself it's a gimmick and personally I feel not a very well thought out one. I have no issues with it but I feel there is much better options in the game already.

Nah nah, you got it all wrong...Kushala's not the same as Ama. Kushala's just a little puppy dog on four legs that needs wings to lift it up. He doesn't float in the air like Ama does because Kushala Daora does not control the air around it. He's not big like Ama, doesn't have the awesome white frills that flap in the breeze like Ama, even in death, and doesn't have the cool Armor that Ama has. And he doesn't create a tirnadoes or that wind tunnel of attraction like Ama does. I really really really want Amatsumagatsuchi because I haven't fought an Ama in years with people, number one because my PSP is broken and two because no one's on Ad Hoc Party anymore.

^ Yeah.. not to many play p3rd at all anymore and since it was never actually released in the west it's doubtfull to get the same treatment as Unite did, being put on IOS and the vita.
And though it might not be the same creature, I think a lot of 4U's monsters are an improvement over most of 3rd gens and before.
.. if you really want though get frontier and fight Shantien as he and amatsu are pretty much alike with the exception of Shantien having more elements and being stronger all around.
Me persinally though I'd just wait 2 more weeks (less actually) and find a MH4U monster I like better. You have 96 to choose from!

So the Austrian Nintendo channel on youtube has just shared the newes TV commercial for MH4U:
It tells you that "An epic adventure awaits you!" with "121 Monsters!" and "2600 Weapons", schows a bit about the new 3DS and in the end tells us that the demo will officially be available on the eShop on Feb. 6th.
2600 weapons over all 14 weapon types + excavation gear sounds about right. but wasn't the monster count at 96? where do the additional 25 monsters come from? is this a hint that there will be more monsters as DLC or did they just get something mixed up?
haven't seen it on TV yet, not really surprising as i havent watched TV since the 15 min it's on youtube now... but it's nice to see it getting this kind of support.

96 is the current count, yes. And as of current no DLC monsters have been released in Japan or announced. One thing a lot of people are waiting to see is if the "Western" version of MH4U also hold the dlc (eshop) information which 4G contained in Japan.

I am not sure... but I think the 96 Monster figure only includes the big guys... the 121 figure might include the bugs, beasts, fish and lizards that populate the game.

96 is all small and large monsters as Tom stated.. the 121 (extra 25) may not be fightable monsters but ones that are not in the game but have an armor set.
Basically 25 monsters who have an excavation/trade set but are not actually features in the game. Lagi is a good example. he has an armor but is not in the game due to no water levels... I'm just guessing though but it sounds plausable.
