Known areas:
Spoiler:
Ancestral Steppe, Primeval Forest, Sunken Hollow, Frozen Seaway, Underground Volcano, Heavenly Mountain, Tower Top, Great Desert, Forbidden Grounds, Lava Island, Thousand Blade Mountain, Arena, 3D Arena, Old Desert
Unknown Great Forest (we will take a closer look at this one on it's own)
New mechanics in MH4U(these have also been addapted in Fronteir and were tested in other games prior to being added in the main series of MH. When asked Capcom Japan stated that a lot of the ideas had actually com from fans of the series in the west and tested in several games before being added into Monster Hunter, some of these were used in previous games such as the "lock on feature".)
Air attacks, weapon upswings leading into air attacks, environmental interaction (wall climbing/jumping ect.), Monster cling attacks (being able to hang on the monster for direct attacks)
Capcom stated that MH4U will include even more interaction with monsters, the environment and airial attacks over MH4 though did not go into detail.
Other additions:
Spoiler:
Capcom has stated that even though they have added a huge ammount of weapons and armors into MH4U they wanted to make the playability of Monster Hunter continue as well as the challenge continue long after you have collected everything. To do this they have added the Unknown Great Forest.
The Unknown Great Forest is basically 4's equivelant of 3's Moga Woods however it will have a huge change over anything seen in MH games before it to include the reward and Mining equipment, known as "Excavation Gear".
Unlike all other areas in the Monster Hunter series, the layout of the Unknown Great Forest is randomized, with the monsters, items, and terrain changing each time it is entered. You can save a particularly favorite map to play over and over again and share with others via streetpass and in Multiplayer session. Also each time the same map is beaten the level of difficulty as well as the rewards found within will increase in rarity.
Excavation Gear:
Armors can be from any monster from any game and will appear differently than their original design. The skills, slots, and defence will also be randomized (within peramiters).
This may mean you will end up with 3 Lagi Blademaster chests all different colors and all with different ammounts of slots and different skills. One may be really good and better than any of the actual pieces you had made from a quest monster while the others you may just want to sell off.
Trading:
In 4U there is an exstinsive trading system based on where you are at in the game.
The Wyverian Wholesaler can exchange monster materials that the players currently own for materials of monsters which are not available to be hunted in the game. These materials can be used to build various equipment from these monsters and may have improvements since their last game debut. In order to unlock the option to trade for these materials, certain conditions must be met in the form of completing Quests in the game.
Example: once you have cleared the correct 7:star: Guild quest you can trade a "Rajang's Tenacity" for a "Gaoren Thoracic"
There are many other new additions to MH4U over previous MH games, (I will add more later) if you have questions or would like to post a few or exspand on some yourself please do so.
It seemed to me that a lot of people didn't know just how much the game had actually been updated, though still a core MH game the amount to do has been really increased and Capcom has seemed to gone out of their way to keep people interested in playing and to keep them challenged.
Though much about 4U spacifically is still unknown and Capcom themselves have stated updates over 4U (even with 4 data being able to transfer to 4U in japan), those of us in the west should have a lot to look forward to early next year. If you have given up on MH or are getting a little worn out.. MH4U might be the time to give it one more go.
In the mean time here are some MH4 video's to show what we do know:
Spoiler:
Spoiler:
E3 2014 Treehouse gameplay 30 minutes
More updates: Several monsters now have an "additional" ragemode due to the Feral Wyvern virus giving them additional abilities when fighting them in later HR ranks.

Most MH monsters are modled after real life monsters or something from the real world in some way.. so a happy bird isn't a far fetched idea...

New footage from 4U. Showcase of new Hammer abilities. You can upswing your mates into aerial attack even when they're in the air/jumping in different direction. They also show new Charge Blade from Brachydios and of course Hermitaur in action.

Just a little more information about the overall game to start with:
Spoiler:
In an interview, it was stated that Capcom intended to put far more effort into adventure and storyline, and there will be a group of traveling caravans. Underwater battling will not be present, however.
New monsters include a mysterious black dragon named Gore Magala and an orange lemur-like Pelagus known as Kecha Wacha. In the TGS trailer, three new monsters were revealed. Nerscylla, who uses webbing to cocoon the hunter,Tetsucabra, a large frog-like creature with huge tusks that dwells in moist areas, and a large Jhen Mohran-like beast known as Daren Mohran that inhabits the Great Desert. The February 2013 trailer also showcased a new armored snake-like monster known as Najarala that seems to dwell in forests and a new giant serpentine-like monster that is similar to Raviente that will appear in this game, as seen in the third trailer. The Kushala Daora returns in this game along with Teostra. In another promotional video it was revealed that the Zinogre will be returning, along with Kirin.
Two new Weapon Classes are introduced in this game, one of them being the Insect Glaive. This double-ended staff is capable of quick fluid attacks like the Long Sword, but it also is capable of summoning a large Neopteron that will drain energy from monsters to boost the Hunter (in terms of attack, health, speed or defense) and propelling the hunter into the air in a polearm fashion.
The second new weapon type is the Charge Blade, capable of transitioning between two different forms. Seemingly, it can be used as a large-scale Sword and Shield, or the blade and shield can be combined to form one large cutting weapon. It also appears to utilize different coatings and charged attacks.
Your hunting journey begins in a market town, known as Barubaré, where many travelers and their caravans get together to sell goods and gather information. Barubaré is also where you'll meet the leader, who will recruit you as a part of his caravan troupe and provide hunters with an Insect Glaive as the hunter's very first weapon. Aside from the leader, the caravan crew consists of his assistants, who acts as the quest receptionist; a traveling merchant; a blacksmith with his apprentice daughter; and finally a cooking Felyne. They'll help you every step of the way with their specialized skills, as you travel from land to land.
The second village is called Naguri Village, which is an underground village populated by a tribe of mole-like people. Its volcanic surroundings make an ideal place for blacksmiths to create their finest work.
There will be several villages other than the two revealed so far, which players will be able to visit upon completing certain quests and advancing in the game. These villages will have their own unique looks and characters.
Every new destination also means more unlocked features from the rest of your caravan members. Additionally, players will freely be able to return to any previous villages at any given time in the game.
(from the wikia)
Something that a lot of people have asked about and an issue many have brought up from Tri and more so in 3U (especially long time MH players) is the difficulty of the game. Many feel that the challenge level had been greatly reduced from Fu to tri and again from Tri to 3U..
While Capcom tended to shy away from this subject in previous interviews they actually addressed it With MH4/4U in the form of the Unknown Great Forest (which has been mentioned earlier).
More details:
Spoiler:
The Unknown Great Forest is a forested area used for free-hunting first introduced in Monster Hunter 4. Characterized by the massive ruins and architectural elements seen among the environment, this area appears to have been richly inhabited by humans at some point in its history. Now, however, the structures are very ancient and crumbling, with thick overgrowth evident as nature continues to reclaim the area.
In its abandoned state, it is home to many wild monsters, such as Seltas Queen, Velocidrome and Basarios. Hunters can use various architectural elements such as ledges and pillars to their advantage during combat with a large monster. Unlike all other areas in the Monster Hunter series, the layout of the Unknown Great Forest is randomized, with the monsters, items, and terrain changing each time it is entered.
(from wikia)
More specifically and interesting to note, if you play a forest map that has a Monster/map/set of goods you like.. You can save it! and share it via streetpass and for multiplayer play and personal play. Whatsmore, each time you play it the difficulty level of the monsters within the Forest as well as the rewards and mined items will increase. This means at some point The monster may become "unbeatable" at your current level of armor and weapons and skill set depending on the monster of course.
Now Keep in mind that this is not to say that the game its self is not challenging. Capcom has stated that their main goal of the Forest is to increase the "Playability" and continued challenge of MH4/4u for players once they have beaten and collected all they could in in the main quests and to offer additional opertunities along the way...
Since the Forest is random each persons experiance should be different but the oppertunity to share is quite nice IMO... And I cant wait to send out my Garwa quest to the world!!!

With the multiple villages they are hping once you unlock each to pick one as a "home village"
In the past you were stuck in one place and if you didn't like the looks of it or the people.. oh well.
With 4U you can choose where you havg your Dober Waist! and get to know the villagers all you want. You can travel and always return home to your own village. which is nice because it makes the came seem more personal and more.. well yours.
You have "your own home base" Possible and armor set that is "Your own and no one else may have the likes of" thanks to the random xcavation gear, "Your own special quest that you can play, send out and hunt on with others" thanks to the Unknown Forest... and so much more that makes "Your Game, Your own". Making 4U pretty much the first of it's king from any MH game.

I just hope these changes are all they are hocked up to be. Monster Hunter is less of a niche game now thanks to release on consoles and handhelds finally. However another game that you never see anymore which used to have as small of a following as Monster Hunter was Armored Core...and you never see it anymore because they screwed themselves over after Armored Core 3 Silent Line by making too many changes that left people unhappy.

yes the skulls the crabs wear are bigger than usual skulls of the monsters, but they are still considered monoblos/diablos skulls. they even took it as far in freedom unite that you could get monoblos/diablos items from breaking the skulls. same with shen gaoren, who was wearing a lao shan lung skull

My only two concerns with 4U are:
1) Whether they increase the number of armor set sets you can register, or not? Becayse 24 was a joke in 3U. I run out of it really quickly... I need to have list of those which can't fit on my PC, it's really terrible...
2) Charm system is the same as in 3U, or charm tables are gone?

On that note, we can register Pouch presets now. That's pretty cool isn't it? (Frontier had that for like ...4 years haha)

Yeah, we really don't know if there'll be charm tables on 4U or not. So far we only know the system presented in 4. Tri and 4 have similar charm system. What if 4U have tables again like 3U? We don't know that yet. Time will tell.

i know it's not sure yet but you can be quite sure that it will at least be simmilar to 4. as the difference from tri to 3U is a completely different one than 4 to 4U.
you'll also have to consider that the save data from 4 will be transfereable to 4U, so it would be really unfair if the ones that transfered their data from 4 would have charms/excavation gear from different tables, and newcomers can only get charms from a single table. also the players that transfered their data would be locked permanently in one table once they start 4U and wouldn't be able to get charms they wanted to get in 4, that they hadn't time to gather.
so changing the charm table system too much would be unfair to both new and old players.

MH Freedom2 to MH Freedom Unite.
tri and 3U are completely different so transfering date would make no sense
