Has happened!!!!

You heard me right. No I must warn you, before you read further the things I am about to tell you takes a bit of understanding but upon realization, your life will be changed for EVER!!!

This past week Nintendo released a new "Program" on the 3DS eShop... And I say program not Game..... Because what this program does is something very... very simple but important. It allows you to write computer programs in "BASIC" on your 3DS....

You heard me right... As of now (well this past Thursday) anything you can imagin (and create using BASIC programing) you can now make directly on your 3DS...

I understand some people may not be completely familiar with what BASIC is so I will explain.

BASIC: Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code

BASIC was originally created in 1964 but remains in use today in many program and computer systems. Many if not almost all original Atari games were writen using BASIC as we as many computer and other video games throughout the late 70's all through the 80's and into the early 90's.

but BASIC does more than just the game, it does the sound, the graphics, and everything. And it does more than just games, you can also use it to create complex computer programs for school, home and offices as well.

So, Still not quite sure what all this means and what the importance of being able to do basic on a Hand held system means... Well for inspiering computer programers it means just about "Everything". Anything you want to create can now be easily made at the touch of your finger tips by just pulling out your 3DS without even needing your computer or any other tools.

For just game players (especially those who love retro game) you don't even have to ever program anything Yourself...

The program includes the ability to convert your creation into a "QR" code which can be scanned and shared. So if you just want to download the program to play games an use programs people have created you can! Just scan the code for whatever it is you want...

nope i can program a game on a real engine instead of a pretend one, to be honest, a game making IDE on a handheld system is not life changing for me.

um I'm gonna agree with vort here. This isn't the 1st time the 3DS has provided a software that's an seriously downgraded version of something bigger and better already available
(I.E. the several music generators software provided by Rytmik compared to the plethura of music softwares available like Mixcraft, Fruityloops, ect. )

Oto: you do realize you can make all that with basic?

and the whole point of it is that it is on a handheld and not a home computer, so not really a downgrade if you can carry it around with you.

dcj91x: do you realize that i'm part of a programming/development team that does this stuff non-profit? I'm not saying it's a downgrade, I'm saying that it's just not anything to get all hyped over when there's better resources available. So what if it's on a handheld? it's not the best thing since sliced bread or anything

^ So what other "better" sources are available on handheld consols that are legal? Or more spacifically the 3DS as that is what the original post is about?

i think what he and I were trying to say in general is that this is NOT the most amazing thing ever in history. It is nice, and a great thing for the 3DS and for programmers, but not the best thing ever that has happened.

I was also implying that Ouya will be/is a better form of getting people into programming and game development.

Now to wait for someone to use this to create a homebrew like exploit for 3ds.

I think so. I had a look for it earlier in the eShop and couldn't find anything.

Yama, after looking, I do not see anywhere stating that it's out in the EU areas yet.

Vegeta, other than playing pireted games the program lets you do a lot of home brew things people were already doing on the original DS/DSi.

It actually almost seems that Nintendo is trying to preempt the whole homebrew scene/hacking by allowing some official tools to do it. First with Colors!3D which started out as a DS homebrew and now this, which essentially lets you make (or download) potentially clones of thousands of games from text based to more involved NES and so on directly on your 3DS.

And of course let's not forget the other apps that can be made with it as well. But there's another thought as well. The program costs $8usd but after that you can download/scan/make anything else free basically giving you an unlimited number of apps on your 3DS.

And all these apps have the potential to use the touchscreen or any of the buttons to play the games. So there is a lot you can do and get. IMO allowing this program was a smart move and an odd one by Nintendo.

Does anyone know if this has some kind of tutorial of how to use it?

It has a help section and several different types of demo programs you can edit. But as far as a full walk through on how to program your best bet is using the Wikipedia or wikia for BASIC.
