First topic message reminder :
Earlier I made a post speculating on the second new weapon for Monster Hunter 4, particularly on it possibly being a new ranged weapon. After all, the ratio of melee weapons to ranged weapons is already a bit unbalanced, but especially now more so with the advent of the "Bug Pole." I immediately came up with the idea on a dual pistol design, which could actually have awesome potential if implemented correctly. (EDIT: Credit goes to Anonymin for naming the initial weapon design!) After all, according to earlier press releases, Capcom is trying to give this new game a more "Western" feel. I think Dual Pistols would fit rather well in that theme. Below are some ideas I came up for this new weapon. It's all still a work in progress, so don't expect anything absolutely amazing. (Let's also not forget that, since they're close to announcing the new weapon, they already have it all pretty much down and done. This is merely an experiment in creativity, and it probably won't be something like this...)
First off: Since this is a Dual Pistol weapon, it'd make sense to be able the chamber them individually. This'll give the weapon some customization: You could chamber up one pistol for Pierce shot, and chamber the second one healing shot to help out teammates. This'll give you more adaptability on the battlefield, as you can respond to dangerous situations faster. There's also the idea of, if fighting two different monsters with two different elemental weaknesses, chambering the guns with different elemental shots. This will allow you to fight more fluidly, as you wouldn't have to stop every few seconds to switch shots.
In keeping with the individual loading; I can see each one holding, at most, 6 shots at a time (See what I did there?? A Pair of Six Shooters?!), for a maximum of 12 shots at any given time. (Of course, skills like Load Up and Clust S All Up could still bump up the mag count. [EDIT: Load Up and Shot Up Skills will effect both pistols. what that means is that you'd actually be getting 2 more shots overall instead of one.] Also, even though you'd still be using two different shots at the same time, or even dual wielding the same shot, you'll still only be able to carry as many shots as a bowgun user, so you'd still have to keep an eye on your ammo count!)
As for controls, I have somewhat of an idea. In regards to Nintendo 3DS controls, I can easily see using the Y and A buttons to fire the left and right guns respectively. As for what the B and X buttons do, I figure those can be used to do special shots. Use the B button to fire both guns at the same time, and perhaps use the A button to have both guns fire at the same time to create a special shot that combines both ammo into a super shot. (still thinking that one out...) As for reloading, I'm sure pressing the Y or A buttons to reload would suffice, but that might make it too easy...
That's what I have so far. Definitely this is a bit convoluted, and it probably wouldn't have worked in any earlier Monster Hunter games. However, I think that it might be possible for it to work in Monster Hunter 4 thanks in no small part to the 3DS's lower screen. That could definitely help in this matter, such as having extra control buttons for separate reload buttons and special shot controls.
So what do you all think of it? Love it? Hate it? Feel free to leave some critique on how it could work better, or perhaps give your own idea of what the second weapon will be!

Or bring attack power to something below a Light Bowgun and disable rapid fire entirely as well, or cut range down to something really short like .50-.70 in-game units.

Both of these are good ideas. I was thinking about lowering the attack power, too.

Yeah, I don't know where them having high attack power was mentioned.
I thought low attack power was pretty much a given.

although I would LOVE a new ranged weapon because it's very true that the melee weapons far out number the ranged, and the dual pistol idea is really awesome. i just cant help but think of the monster hunter orage manga and how they had the whip weapon type in it. im not exaticaly sure how the weapon might work but i think it would be able to pull the hunter towards a large monster or a wall or a small monster towards the hunter. I've also heard of a fist type weapon that would be a sort of fast impact weapon (Brass Knuckles type deal). Just some ideas XD

Gunswords.

Stab. Shoot. Add in kung-fu moves and you're done.
Alternatively, do it Power Ranger style!

But to use it effectively you must be at least 80% Emo, or 100% FA-HAAABULOUS~ in skintight bodysuits.

I'd be all for dual pistols, if whenever holstered, the character did a badass cowboy-style holstering.

Yeah, I thought of Malik, too, except like 90% of his moves are just generic elemental spells. His concept is right on, but the execution of that concept is terrible.
I like the giant boomerang idea a lot more than the dual pistols, honestly. Fits the MH style a lot better, imo.
Still think gunswords are a worthy consideration. Gunhammers. Gun + melee weapon = awesome.

I'm having trouble trying to picture a teched out boomerang doubling as a gun...
But a Great Boomerang would be perfect for tri as a heavier wep with some range to it. gun wise tho... unless like it had a charged throw & it did blast damage a gunnerang would be too wonky.

Not sure where it was mentioned the boomerangs would have gun bits, but that is an EXCELLENT idea.

I have no Cross-Over ideas but...
Maybe CAPCOM could work their magic on a Nun-chuck style weapon? Or a whip of some sorts? It'd be nice to see.

I believe that would be more of a rifle-scythe, due to the shape of the ejected casings.

So, I was thinking of ideas for new weapons, and here is a couple.
Dual Hammers: These would be a pair of two hammers. They would work like the dual swords, except they perform impact damage and rely on raw damage over elemental. They would also be interchangeable for different power combinations (this would also happen with any other dual wielding weapon, which is currently only the dual swords.). For instance; you could have 2 Diablos DH (dual hammers) which would focus of KO and raw output; A Barroth DH and Deviljho DS for raw damage; A Goa Magogra DS and a Gigginox Sub DS for two kinds of status (dragon virus and paralysis) and finally a Jhen Morhan sword and Ludroth Shield for a sword and shield combo. This isn't a new weapon as is a new mechanic for small weapons.
That's all I have currently.

How about this, a giant shield! You attack by ramming and swinging the shield into enemies, and defending attacks builds up a tension meter that lets you use an attack that has a 100% chance to knock over a foe. When wielded, it is in a constant defend position and you can move at lance walking speed. Normal defend button as a seperate attack use. Hunters using it would also be good trap bait for monsters. My reason for this idea: An decent impact weapon that can defend like a lance.

how about scythe? It moves fast, cuning, and stick in monsters body parts and cut them out.Like have a disaster gauge,in which when its full,it enters disaster mode. And in disaster mode, the scythe sticks into the monster when you strike and rips it out the monster.
